Karen Huger Obtains Verdict in DUI Case Following Car Accident
The Real Housewives of Potomac star Karen Huger has received a ruling in her DUI trial nearly nine months after her car accident in Maryland.
According to her representative, Huger, 61, was found guilty on almost all charges except for reckless driving, as reported by People on Wednesday, December 18. She is set to be sentenced on January 29.
“While we are disheartened by the jury’s decision, we respect their judgment and thank them for their attention to our case,” stated Huger’s lawyer, A. Scott Bolden, in a statement to People on Wednesday. “We are preserving Mrs. Huger’s right to appeal and will actively seek justice on her behalf. We are grateful for the support and prayers for Mrs. Huger and her family during this period.”
In March, Huger was in a car accident in Potomac, Maryland. The Montgomery County Police informed TMZ at the time that Huger was driving her 2017 Maserati in an “aggressive manner” when she collided with an intersection crosswalk sign and a parking sign.
She was not arrested but received several citations from police on the scene. Subsequently, she faced charges for DUI and DWI.
After the incident, Huger shared a detailed statement regarding her emotional state leading up to the crash.
“I appreciate all the prayers and kind wishes during this frightening experience. I am still in shock from last night’s event but grateful to be alive today. After the loss of my beloved mother, I have been experiencing waves of grief, and with Mother’s Day approaching, it’s felt like a tsunami,” she told TMZ in March. “I met a friend for dinner and discussed very emotional topics, which left me in tears while driving home. I saw a car coming straight at me, swerved to avoid a head-on collision, hit the divider, and then a tree. I’m bruised but thankful to be alive! I did receive citations, one unrelated to the incident, which is understandable, but I was taken aback that the car that nearly hit me just drove off!”
She emphasized: “It’s crucial to be aware of your emotional state while driving, and let this serve as a reminder for everyone to wear their seatbelts. My mother may be my guardian angel, but the seatbelt saved my life.”
During Huger’s trial, body camera footage revealed her admitting to being “hammered” and sounding impaired.
Several witnesses testified, including an EMT who stated that Huger declined treatment at the accident scene and appeared to “sway” when attempting to enter an ambulance.
Huger is an original cast member of The Real Housewives of Potomac, which debuted in 2016. The Bravo reality series is currently airing its ninth season, which began in October, focusing on the aftermath of the DUI incident.
