Kirk Herbstreit Reflects on 30-Year Friendship with ‘Gameday’ Co-Host Lee Corso
As Lee Corso approaches his television farewell, his College Gameday cohost Kirk Herbstreit shared reflections on their enduring friendship over the years.
Corso, at 89, will make his final appearance on the iconic ESPN college football show on August 30, when the reigning national champion Ohio State Buckeyes take on the Texas Longhorns in Columbus.
The former head coach of the University of Indiana has been a key figure on the show since its launch in 1987.
Herbstreit, 55, who became part of College Gameday in 1996, expressed how Corso has profoundly influenced his perspective on life, both on and off the air.
“Sometimes, the emotions people evoke in us speak louder than their words,” Herbstreit told Us Weekly while promoting his collaboration with Purina Pro Plan. “He embodies that sentiment.”
Herbstreit noted that Corso’s positive influence quickly became evident to him.
“From our very first encounter during my audition, when I was nervous at 25, until now, he has a way of making everyone feel valued,” he remarked. “His demeanor and words reflect his genuine care. Despite his health struggles, he remains incredibly positive and grateful for his life. Observing this has inspired me to adopt the same outlook.”
Corso, who suffered a stroke in 2009 that left him partially paralyzed, faced health challenges that caused him to miss several College Gameday episodes last season.
“I aim to start each day with gratitude,” Herbstreit continued. “There are countless lessons to learn in life, but the most significant one for me has been the positivity he radiates.”
As Herbstreit — who also serves as the color analyst for Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football — prepares for another season, he has been enjoying time with his four golden retrievers: Peter, Mitch, Theo, and Beau.
With his dogs, including his late cherished golden retriever Ben, becoming familiar faces on College Gameday and at games, Herbstreit shared, “People often recognize me and want to chat about their pets.”
Given his passion for dogs, Herbstreit has teamed up with Purina Pro Plan’s “Fueled By” video series, which highlights the special bond elite athletes, including NFL tight end George Kittle and soccer star Rose Lavelle, share with their dogs.
“I’ve always been surrounded by dogs,” Herbstreit shared. “I adore the unique relationships they bring into our lives. When Pro Plan approached me for this collaboration, it felt like a natural fit.”
He added, “Traveling to meet these athletes was enlightening. Knowing them as professional athletes is one thing, but understanding their devotion as dog owners, despite their busy lives, was truly enjoyable.”
