Landman’s Jacob Lofland Advocates for Cooper and Ariana Ahead of Their Engagement

Landman‘s Jacob Lofland is advocating for Cooper and Ariana’s fast-paced romance as the fictional couple plans to get engaged.

Warning: This story includes spoilers about Landman.

In the Sunday, December 14, episode of the popular Paramount+ series, Ariana (Paulina Chavez) expressed that living with Cooper and making future plans felt unsettling without them being engaged or married. Cooper hinted at wanting to commit, mentioning that he needed permission from her father.

Cooper then drove to ask Ariana’s dad for her hand in marriage. Her father stated that while Ariana didn’t require his permission, he did give his approval, moving Cooper a step closer to proposing to his girlfriend, whom he started dating shortly after her husband’s death.

“[It’s] for the audience to draw their own conclusions on [whether they are moving too fast]. Everyone has their own perspective,” Lofland, 29, remarked. “But the reality is that in these characters’ lives, no one else is living it. It’s just them.”

Lofland pointed out that only Cooper and Ariana understand what works for them.

“It could be two weeks or two months. I’ve heard of couples married for 30 years who dated for only six weeks,” he noted. “Conversely, I’ve seen pairs that dated for seven years marry and then split within three months.”

The future of Cooper and Ariana’s relationship is “uncertain,” Lofland added, “They’re a really strong couple and can become even stronger as they learn about each other. This is Cooper’s first meaningful relationship, so he’s figuring out how to navigate it, especially while juggling work and trying to launch his own company.”

He continued: “It’s going to be a learning experience for sure. We’ll embark on this journey alongside him.”

Landman, which premiered in 2024, explores the oilfield industry in West Texas. At the show’s start, Cooper was gearing up for his first day at work with his father; however, on his second day, an explosion claimed the lives of his coworkers, including Ariana’s husband, Elvio (Alejandro Akara). By season 1’s conclusion, Cooper and Ariana were cohabiting with her and Elvio’s infant child.

As season 2 approached, Lofland was uncertain about what Cooper’s journey would entail — both professionally and personally.

“We had all 10 scripts, effectively shooting a 10-hour movie with a clear start and finish. With season 2, we began with just two scripts, and then they were released weekly like traditional TV. We were learning alongside the audience, figuring things out week to week,” he recounted. “It certainly posed challenges when you receive a script on Friday and start shooting it on Monday.”

Lofland hinted at upcoming surprises, stating, “There are definitely twists, turns, and unexpected moments in the next episodes. Some things will catch people by surprise — they sure surprised me. There are some incredible developments — both good and bad — but it will all come together in the end.”

New episodes of Landman season 2 are available on Paramount+ every Sunday.
