Lauren Graham Shares Letter from Diane Keaton Written Prior to Her Passing

Lauren Graham is honoring her Because I Said So co-star Diane Keaton following the actress’s unexpected passing.

On Monday, October 13, Graham, 58, took to Instagram to post a portion of a letter Keaton had sent her in the years prior to her death.

“Please don’t be a stranger. Please invite me to one of your dinners. And finally …. Please hug yourself in the morning, and remember to write your book, and don’t let yourself get anxious, you big winner you. Love, Di,” the letter stated in part.

In her post’s caption, Graham reminisced about her meaningful friendship with Keaton over the years, highlighting the late actress’s significant impact.

“A few lines from a letter Diane Keaton wrote me years ago, when writing a book was just a dream of mine,” Graham wrote. “Her work as an actor inspired me. Her encouragement changed my life.” (Graham is a prolific author, having published several books, including 2022’s Have I Told You This Already?)

Graham and Keaton played mother-daughter duo Daphne Wilder and Maggie, respectively, in the 2007 film Because I Said So, alongside Mandy Moore, Gabriel Macht, Tom Everett Scott, Piper Perabo, Stephen Collins, Colin Ferguson, and Tony Hale.

Fans filled the comments section of Graham’s post with their condolences and memories of Keaton.

“This is such a beautiful memory to have ❤️,” one user commented, while another wrote, “It’s the people we meet along the way who help shape our destiny 🩷.”

“How lucky you are to have this piece of her to cherish forever!” a third user remarked, while a fourth added, “What a precious friend to have. She seemed to be an encourager to all.”

Keaton’s passing was confirmed on Saturday, October 11, at the age of 79. Although the cause of death was not immediately disclosed, a friend of the actress later informed People that her health had “declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.”

“In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who maintained a very private environment,” the friend shared with the outlet. “Even long-time friends were not fully aware of what was happening.”

In the wake of Keaton’s passing, Because I Said So actress Moore, 41, also paid tribute to her onscreen mother on Instagram.

“They say don’t meet your heroes, but I got to work with one of mine and even call her ‘mom’ for a few months. It was an honor of a lifetime,” Moore captioned two photos with Keaton on Saturday. “What an incandescent human Di is and was. I am so sad she’s gone for all the reasons, but also because it felt like she’d be here forever, dazzling us with her talent and charm (and her style, c’mon)!!! One of the very best to ever do it. All my love to her children and loved ones.”

Other stars who had the privilege of calling Keaton “Mom” onscreen also shared their tributes, including Emma Roberts. Roberts, 34, portrayed Keaton’s daughter in the 2023 film Maybe I Do.

“The absolute greatest,” Roberts wrote via her Instagram Stories, along with a photo of Keaton. “So lucky to have worked with her. Love you, Diane.”
