Meghan Markle Encourages Archie and Lilibet to Share Their Highlights and Challenges

Meghan Markle discussed the dinner ritual she shares with her and Prince Harry’s children, Archie and Lilibet, during a recent bookstore event.

“At the end of the day, we share our ‘rose’ — the highlight of our day — and our ‘thorn’ — something that was challenging. Every day has its ups and downs, and this practice opens up honest conversations, especially when kids tend to give just yes or no responses,” Meghan, 44, elaborated on Wednesday, October 22. “It’s a wonderful way to connect with them and delve deeper into their feelings.”

During the Wednesday event, Meghan joined her Northwestern University sorority sister Courtney Adamo at Godmothers in Summerland, California, for a conversation about hosting, parenting, and more, which was live-streamed on Substack and Instagram.

The event, titled “Compare Notes on Creating a Home That’s Filled With Joy,” was moderated by cofounder Victoria Jackson and showcased Courtney and her husband Matthew Adamo’s new book, The Family Home. (The Adamos have five children, aged 8 to 20.)

In Netflix’s With Love, Meghan Markle shares glimpses of her life in Montecito, California, and often highlights her family dynamics. Since relocating to California in 2020 with Prince Harry after stepping down as senior royals, they have embraced a more private lifestyle.

Meghan also mentioned that her 4-year-old daughter, Lilibet, often brings humor to their rose and thorn moments.

“Once, when I asked her to share her rose and thorn, she exclaimed, ‘My day was just a blast!’’” Meghan recalled with a smile.

Meghan, who married Harry, 41, in May 2018 and welcomed Archie, 6, and Lilibet in May 2019 and June 2021, respectively, also shared another comforting ritual: the use of a “healing blanket.”

She explained that whenever one of her kids feels under the weather, they reach for the blanket — a gift from Jackson — to provide comfort.

Additionally, Meghan makes it a point to start each day with music.

“The first thing I do upon waking is turn on the music at home,” she shared. She even brings a portable speaker when she travels to create her desired ambiance and lights a scented candle.

“I always travel with a candle,” she admitted. “I’m very aware of fragrances and what they mean to me — it brings that feeling of home.”

As a result of the first two seasons of her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, Meghan’s lifestyle advice has sparked considerable discussion. In the series, she shares various recipes and crafting ideas, including flower arranging and candlemaking.

“The series focuses on doing what you can, with love,” Meghan told People in March.

Regarding her children, she expressed her hope that they feel “proud to be a part of the beginning of this [lifestyle brand] with me.”

“Having my own daughter while championing girls’ rights is special. I see this as a multigenerational story — Archie is included too, as is my husband. I cherish the idea of creating something meaningful in front of my daughter and showing her what it means to be a working mother,” she stated. “I hope this becomes part of her legacy as well.”
