Meghan Markle Makes Light of Her Box-Dyed Hair, Comparing It to Elvira’s Look

Like many of us, Meghan Markle turned to at-home beauty solutions during the pandemic lockdown — and her DIY attempts didn’t exactly pan out either.

“During the pandemic, I was constantly ordering boxed hair dye,” Meghan, 43, shared during the April 22 episode of her “[Confessions of a Female Founder](https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/building-your-brand-brick-by-brick-with-highbrow/id1803670198?i=1000704422515)” podcast. “I thought I’d end up looking just like the model on the box.”

Unfortunately for her, that wasn’t the result. “Instead, I ended up with this very inky, almost Elvira-like black hair,” she recounted with a chuckle. “I texted [celebrity stylist] Serge [Normant], and he told me, ‘You need to see Kadi.’” (Elvira, known as the mistress of the dark, is famous for her long, jet-black hair teased to perfection.)

Meghan shared her relatable hair mishap while reflecting on her first encounter with Kadi Lee, the founder of Highbrow Hippie, back in 2020. She recalled reaching out to stylist Normant to find Lee, who had just opened her salon in Los Angeles as the world went into lockdown.

“It was definitely a 2020 moment,” Meghan noted, adding, “I remember that day vividly.”

Lee completely agreed, recounting how her day of fixing Meghan’s hair — while donning full protective masks — remains “so vivid” in her memory. She recalled receiving a “big bear hug” from both Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry.

While Meghan acknowledged that her 2020 hair color was less than ideal, makeup artist Daniel Martin exclusively told Us Weekly that the duchess is “incredibly skilled” when it comes to her own hair and makeup while she’s on the go.

He pointed to her appearances during a May 2024 tour in Nigeria as evidence. “I think when I’m not with her, she really gets creative,” Martin, who handled Meghan’s royal wedding glam, shared with Us at that time.

The professional stylist elaborated, “I believe that’s the exciting part when you see her, like, she’s in Nigeria now celebrating the Invictus Games’ 10th anniversary. It’s just her. No stylist, no hairdresser,” Martin added. “She’s managing everything herself, and she’s fantastic at it.”

Meghan’s laid-back and natural beauty aesthetics, along with her passion for DIY, have been a part of her since her younger years.

In fact, she disclosed earlier this month that her entrepreneurial journey began at just 11 when she created her own scrunchies from leftover fabric scraps.

“I’d purchase fabric remnants from the store and elastics, then use my little home sewing machine to craft scrunchies and sell them,” Meghan revealed in an interview with Fortune published on April 8.

The As Ever founder previously discussed her early business savvy during a 2021 appearance at the The New York Times DealBook Online Summit, reminiscing about selling her handmade scrunchies for “five bucks.”

“I recall the pride I felt, knowing I had created something,” Meghan shared during the event. “I had invested in myself and earned for my labor. That brings a great sense of accomplishment.”
