Meryl Streep Gives a Subtle Nod to The Devil Wears Prada in a Cerulean Sweater
Meryl Streep is preparing for the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada 2.
At 76, Streep looked stunning in a cerulean blue cable knit sweater during her appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Thursday, April 2. The actress, portraying Miranda Priestly, showcased the eye-catching custom piece from J. Crew.
She accessorized her outfit with blue eyeglasses, silver hoop earrings, and a black leather watch.
During the interview, Streep shared insights about the upcoming movie, which is slated for release on May 1. “It’s been 20 years, and Andrea has gone off to do remarkable work in journalism,” she revealed about Anne Hathaway’s character, Andy Sachs.
“At the start of the film, all media outlets are under pressure from our new digital overlords,” she continued. “So she finds herself unemployed … and circumstances lead her back to Runway [magazine]. I [Miranda Priestly] was unaware that she had been hired.”
For those unfamiliar, Streep’s blue sweater has gained iconic status due to a memorable conversation between Miranda and Andy in the original movie, which premiered in 2006.
Back then, Runway editors were debating Andy’s outfit choices.
“You think this has nothing to do with you,” Miranda lectured as she surveyed Andy’s outfit. “You go to your closet and pick out, I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, because you want to convey that you take yourself too seriously to care about your appearance. But what you don’t realize is that sweater isn’t just blue; it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean.”
In July 2025, Hathaway also showcased the iconic color while filming the sequel. During that time, she posted a TikTok in a nearly identical sweater to what Andy wore in the original film. She appeared in the frame while brushing her teeth, smiled softly at the camera, and swept her brunette hair to one side, going makeup-free.
“Heading to werk #dwp2,” she captioned her post. Excitement flooded the comments from celebrity friends and fans alike.
“Iconic,” Ashley Benson commented, while another follower added, “SHE’S WEARING THAT CERULEAN BLUE!!!” A fan quoted Streep, “It’s not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean ✨.”
