Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo Discuss the NCIS Tony and Ziva Cancellation

The tale of love between Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David has come to an end now that Paramount+ has announced the cancellation of NCIS: Tony & Ziva after its inaugural season.

Stars Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, who portrayed Tony and Ziva on both NCIS and the spinoff, released a joint statement on Friday, December 19, just after the cancellation news broke.

“We feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to reprise these characters and continue Tony and Ziva’s story,” the long-time collaborators said via Weatherly’s Instagram. “Our heartfelt gratitude goes to our amazing cast, crew, writers, directors, and producers, as well as our partners at CBS Studios and Paramount+ who made this dream come true.”

They added: “But above all, we want to express our thanks to the fans worldwide who accompanied us on this journey and finally got to see Tony and Ziva achieve their happily ever after.”

CBS and Paramount+ earlier announced on Friday that NCIS: Tony & Ziva would not be returning for a second season.

Viewers first met Special Agent Anthony “Tony” DiNozzo in season 1 of NCIS in 2003, which chronicles the Naval Criminal Investigative Service unit in Washington, D.C., as they solve crimes involving military personnel.

Ziva David, played by De Pablo, joined the flagship series in season 3 in 2005, where her dynamic with Tony was immediate. However, it was not until 2013 that their relationship progressed to a romantic level.

Three years later, Ziva’s family home in Israel faced a terrorist attack, leading to her being presumed dead. In the aftermath, Tony discovered that he and Ziva share a daughter named Tali, prompting him to leave NCIS to care for her.

In season 17 of NCIS, it was revealed that Ziva was alive, though her future with Tony remained uncertain.

Weatherly, 57, departed NCIS in 2016 after 13 seasons, while de Pablo, 46, left in season 11 in 2013, making a brief return in season 17 to confirm her survival.

NCIS: Tony & Ziva reintroduces alums Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David — but what have they been doing since their departure from the D.C. office? The series premiere in September transported fans to modern times where Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo) were co-parenting their daughter, Tali […]

In February 2024, Paramount+ announced that the actors would reprise their roles in the new show, NCIS: Tony & Ziva.

During the spinoff’s premiere in September, Tony and Ziva were co-parenting Tali in France. After Tony’s company was accused of embezzling funds from Europol — and Tali became a target — he and Ziva came together to safeguard their daughter and exonerate him.

The first season wrapped up in October, giving fans insights into the missing years between 2020, when Tony and Ziva reunited, and 2025, when they collaborated again to fight crime. The couple officially rekindled their romance.

“They’re both actively [and] honestly trying,” de Pablo exclusively told Us Weekly in October, discussing why viewers should remain hopeful that Ziva and Tony won’t separate again. “They’re not trying [or] avoiding the wounds. They’re making an effort to acknowledge them.”

She elaborated on why the couple ultimately found their way back together in the spinoff, stating, “The real connection between them comes from the very tender moments they share, as well as the flirtatious and sexy scenes.”

While the spinoff is not set to return—at least for the time being—fans can catch season 1 of NCIS: Tony & Ziva on Paramount+.
