‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’: Cast Insights on Potential Sequel
My Best Friend’s Wedding enthusiasts have been hoping for a sequel since the 1990s, and many cast members share that sentiment.
The romantic comedy debuted in 1997, centering on Julianne (Julia Roberts), a food columnist who realizes her love for her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) just as he becomes engaged to Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). In a bid to win Michael’s heart, Julianne attempts to sabotage his relationship with Kimmy during the week leading up to the wedding. Complications arise when she recruits her gay best friend George (Rupert Everett) to pose as her fake fiancé.
“We were really fortunate to come together,” Roberts shared with E! Daily Pop in April 2022. “None of us knew each other prior to the film, yet we had amazing chemistry. It just worked. We all genuinely liked each other. Dermot and I remain close friends — we talk frequently, and that speaks volumes about the wonderful experience we shared during the making of this film.”
This rom-com, directed by P.J. Hogan, was filmed in Chicago and marked Roberts’ return to the genre that launched her career with 1990’s Pretty Woman. Although it eventually became a box office sensation, grossing $127 million domestically, it faced initial backlash during test screenings, where audiences were dissatisfied with the film’s original ending, which had Julianne finding romance with a wedding guest (John Corbett) after being rejected by Michael.
“The focus group wanted Julianne to have a different ending,” Hogan told Entertainment Weekly in 2019. “They hadn’t forgiven her yet. They just weren’t prepared for her to end up with someone else. I thought George would be the right choice, as the film truly shone when Rupert was on screen. His chemistry with Julia is exceptional.”
Hogan revised the film’s conclusion to have Julianne depart into the sunset with her platonic soulmate, George, instead.
“When I read the [final scene], I was amazed. It’s beautiful,” Everett expressed to EW. “The ending is both wonderful and tragic in a way. It’s incredibly moving. Another element of the film is that while it’s a comedy, it also includes moments that are genuinely touching and heartfelt.”
Over two decades later, fans are eager to witness Julianne’s next journey. Keep reading for all the comments from the cast of My Best Friend’s Wedding regarding a potential sequel:
