NFL’s KaVontae Turpin Arrested on Weapons and Drug Charges: Report
NFL player KaVontae Turpin has reportedly been taken into custody on charges related to weapons and drugs.
ESPN has reported that Turpin, 28, was arrested in Texas on Saturday, July 5, and subsequently booked at the Collin County Jail. The Dallas Cowboys player faces charges for unlawful possession of a weapon and for having less than 2 oz. of marijuana.
Records obtained by Us Weekly indicate that Turpin was released from jail on Sunday, July 6, after posting a $1,500 bail.
Following a remarkable season in the 2022 USFL spring football league, Turpin signed with the Cowboys. He achieved Pro Bowl recognition during his first season in the NFL, making history as the first Cowboys player to be selected for the Pro Bowl as a designated return specialist.
Turpin secured a three-year, $18 million contract in March, according to DallasCowboys.com. The official Cowboys Instagram account shared a photo of Turpin beaming as he signed the contract. The caption read, “The fastest player in the NFL is staying in Dallas ⭐️.”
In a video, Turpin expressed his gratitude to fans: “KaVontae Turpin here with the Cowboys. I just wanted to say shoutout Cowboy nation, I’m resigning. Here for another three years, man. Time to hit the ground running,” he stated.
Turpin previously attended Texas Christian University, where he was released after facing legal issues. In 2019, NBC 5 Dallas-Forth Worth reported that Turpin pleaded guilty to assault stemming from an incident in October 2018. He was sentenced to two years of deferred adjudication probation and required to attend a 27-week abuse intervention program.
Additionally, Turpin was arrested in New Mexico in March 2018 for alleged assault, including a battery charge. He pleaded not guilty to the battery charge, as reported by ESPN. Subsequently, Turpin was dismissed from Texas Christian University.
“The football staff was aware of an incident in New Mexico but were not informed that charges included an alleged battery,” stated Texas Christian University, according to ESPN. “At the time, the available information only indicated a charge related to property damage. We were not made aware until yesterday that his legal issues remained unresolved.”
Years later, Turpin reflected on his past actions, saying, “I learned that I have to take accountability for my actions,” during a 2022 interview with reporters, according to NBC 5 Dallas-Forth Worth. “I’m looking forward to becoming a better person now.”
