Nicholas Brendon, Star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Passes Away at 54
Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Nicholas Brendon has passed away at the age of 54.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the actor’s family conveyed to Us Weekly in a statement on Friday, March 20, revealing he died peacefully in his sleep due to “natural causes.” (The Hollywood Reporter was the first to cover this news.)
“Many know Nicky for his acting career and the memorable characters he portrayed throughout the years. In more recent times, Nicky discovered a deep passion for painting and art,” the statement elaborated. “He loved sharing his contagious enthusiasm for art with family, friends, and fans. Nicky was passionate, sensitive, and incredibly motivated to create. Those who truly knew him recognized that his art reflected his innermost self.”
The family pointed out that while it is “no secret” he “faced challenges in the past,” he was “receiving medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.”
“Our family requests privacy during this difficult time as we mourn his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with passion, creativity, and heart,” the statement concluded. “We thank everyone for their love and support.”
Brendon is most renowned for his role as Xander Harris on Buffy, a show he starred in for seven seasons alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, David Boreanaz, Anthony Head, and others. He also made appearances in various TV and film projects until 2021.
In 2023, Brendon disclosed that he had suffered a heart attack and had been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, in addition to cauda equina syndrome. He underwent multiple spinal surgeries prior to his death.
