Rory McIlroy Criticized for ‘Arrogant’ Remarks About Green Jacket

The scoreboard for the 2026 Masters Tournament has become notably more competitive as it approaches the final round on Sunday, April 12. Despite relinquishing his remarkable Masters lead, Rory McIlroy expressed that he remains “comfortable.”

Some fans might contend that he’s a bit too comfortable.

“I’d like to think that I’ll play with a bit more freedom and approach it as if I’ve already secured a green jacket, which I have,” said the reigning Masters champion after Saturday’s third round on April 11. “I sometimes just need to remind myself of that.”

He added, “I believe the stakes regarding the pairings will be somewhat more relaxed, and the atmosphere out there will also feel a bit lighter. So, I’m not concerned about that at all. I do wish I were a few shots ahead, but I’m comfortable. I played with Cam [Young] during the first two days, and I’m with him again [Sunday], so I think it’s a comfortable setup for both of us.”

McIlroy’s remarks didn’t sit well with some golf fans, who shared their opinions on social media.

“This comment from Rory McIlroy after losing a historic 6-shot lead seems incredibly arrogant & implies a mindset of ‘one Masters championship is enough for me,’” noted one user on X. “Tiger Woods would never respond like this.”

“There’s just no way anyone actually likes this guy,” wrote another.

Others defended McIlroy, asserting that his comments were taken out of context.

“Such a bizarre way to interpret this. A guy who has faced ‘Career Grand Slam’ pressure for over a decade,” remarked one user on X. “He’s tied going into Sunday for another green jacket, and potentially becoming one of only three to win back-to-back… FEELING AND PLAYING FREE. I shouldn’t rise to the bait, but here we are. Don’t misread a quote from an all-time great.”

McIlroy and Young are currently tied for first place and will be paired together for the final round at Augusta National. McIlroy held a historic six-stroke advantage after the first two rounds (the largest lead in Masters history through 36 holes), but Young rebounded in the third round to catch McIlroy atop the leaderboard.

“It feels pretty good. It’s a place that I cherish,” Young stated after his Saturday round, his best ever at Augusta National. “This is my fifth Masters, and it feels special to return each time.”

McIlroy and Young will tee off at 2:25 p.m. ET, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to this iconic tournament.
