Sarah Jessica Parker Responds to Criticism of Che Diaz in And Just Like That
Sarah Jessica Parker was taken aback to discover that And Just Like That character Che Diaz (portrayed by Sara Ramirez) was not widely liked by fans.
In an interview with The Guardian published on Friday, June 6, Parker disclosed that she was unaware of the character’s polarizing reception until a friend mentioned it to her.
“A friend of mine brought it up to me, and I was like: ‘What are you talking about?’” she shared. “He said: ‘Yeah, there’s been all this discussion.’ I’ve been an actor for 50 years, and I rarely pay attention to outside chatter. I enjoyed collaborating with them.”
Parker also reflected on the interest that both the show and her character Carrie Bradshaw have garnered from Gen Z, who admire the character years after her initial introduction to viewers as a Manhattan writer.
“It’s interesting, because their lives are so distinct – the language they use around dating differs,” she noted. “They seem less patient, more critical, and not as forgiving of others’ flaws. I’m not criticizing it; it’s just what I’ve observed. It’s fascinating how passionately they feel about these topics. It doesn’t mean they aren’t questioning Big and Carrie’s relationship or how he treated her, or the choices Carrie made. People had those intense opinions back then, too.”
When asked if she feels let down that the original series’ storylines, particularly the negative relationships of the main characters, are still relatable, Parker offered a reflective reply.
“While it could be disheartening, the show also focuses on finding home and happiness, whatever that means to you,” she explained. “I believe those in their 20s and 30s should be searching. There should be something meaningful and thrilling worth pursuing. While it’s a bit dreary that incredible women of all ages still feel frustrated by the dating landscape, I do see many happy endings.”
The third season premiered on May 29 on HBO Max, with new episodes released weekly. The June 5 episode depicted Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw dealing with a rat problem in her new Gramercy Park residence.
Carrie sold her Upper East Side brownstone in season 2 after reuniting with Aidan Shaw (John Corbett), who refused to step foot in the home where she had cheated on him. She also sold the place she once shared with her husband Mr. Big (Chris Noth), who was killed off in the series’ first episode. Although the townhome was valued at $5 million in real life, the show doesn’t specify what Carrie actually paid for it.
