Scott Porter from Ginny and Georgia Makes Case for Paul as Baby’s Dad Instead of Joe
Scott Porter understands that many Ginny & Georgia fans are rooting for Joe to be the father of Georgia’s baby — but he’s advocating for Paul instead.
“Listen, our show thrives on high drama. We rarely take the straightforward path,” Porter, 45, shared exclusively with Us Weekly at the Motion Picture & Television Fund NextGen Annual Summer Party on Sunday, June 22. “If you want the chaos to continue, having it be Paul’s baby is quite intriguing.”
Porter acknowledges Joe (Raymond Ablack) as a strong candidate as well, adding, “The show has certainly indicated that there’s something worth exploring between Joe and Georgia. If you’re looking for a complete [and] happy ending — which I’m not sure we achieve on our show — then Joe should be the father.”
Although filming for season 4 hasn’t begun yet, Porter has complete faith in the writers’ team.
“I trust our writers will handle this masterfully,” he emphasized. “They’re going to keep you on the edge of your seat. Right now, I’m just a fan like everyone else. So I know nothing and will have to wait and see.”
The season 3 finale of the beloved Netflix series, which debuted on June 5, surprised Us when Georgia (Brianne Howey) discovered she is pregnant. For now, it remains uncertain whether Paul — or Joe — is the father.
Creator Sarah Lampert recently conveyed to Us that making this decision was not straightforward.
“When we entered the season 4 writers’ room, I was completely certain about whose baby it was,” she disclosed. “I came into the writers’ room and said, ‘Here’s whose baby it is. Change my mind.’ The writers’ room is exceptional. Our writers are fantastic, and it truly creates a dynamic, lively environment.”
Consequently, the choice may have evolved along the way. “What makes the show great is that it really comes alive at every stage of the process. But certainly in the writers’ room. So it wasn’t definitively settled,” Lampert admitted. “They’ve changed my mind before. Let’s put it that way.”
She mentioned that the room was “utterly divided” on the issue of paternity. “We went back and forth multiple times. It was a full-on school debate effort,” she elaborated. “It was incredible because there are pros and cons story-wise to both options — but there is one clear answer, and I’m not going to reveal it.”
Ablack, for his part, has made his loyalty to Joe known, teasing Us, “In my heart, Joe is the father. But honestly, I don’t know. I’m as eager for episode 1 of season 4 as everyone else is to uncover that truth.”
Porter — like the rest of Us — is eager to see what unfolds. He even expressed his support for a potential onscreen reconciliation between Georgia and Paul, despite their marriage unraveling in season 3 due to her high-profile murder trial.
“You can never say never with our show. Many relationships have frayed and then been rekindled. Whether it’s a broken family relationship or a fractured partnership, our show has demonstrated that everything can, in some way, be reignited,” he hinted. “However, it’s going to take some time to reach that point. This season was a reckoning for many of our characters, and after such a reckoning, introspection is necessary.”
Porter holds high hopes for Paul moving forward.
“Paul needs to engage in some serious soul-searching. I think you’re going to see Georgia feeling the same way — as her situation is changing so quickly,” he stated. “In that journey, if they find their way back to one another, I think it would be really intriguing. But whether that will happen? I have no idea.”
Ginny & Georgia is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
