Sean Kaufman Discusses His Hair Transformation in The Summer I Turned Pretty
Sean Kaufman is ready to discuss his transformation.
Kaufman, known for his role as Steven Conklin on Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, has noticed fans commenting on his appearance in season 3, and he shared exclusively with Us Weekly how this change came about.
He revealed that the credit for his long, curly bangs goes to showrunner Jenny Han, who is also the author of the beloved book series. Han had a clear vision and took the lead on this style.
“Jenny and I had an extensive conversation about it, which is quite amusing,” Kaufman, 25, shared with Us. “She approached me one day after seeing a TikTok of me playing in a pool and said, ‘This is what I want.’”
Kaufman continued, “My hair was wet and short, and I thought, ‘What?’ She was adamant, ‘Your hair this season. This is what I want and I know it.’”
Trusting Han, 44, with her artistic direction, Kaufman’s next step was transforming his straight hair into curls. “In a very Korean manner, they gave me a perm,” he explained. “They cut my hair and gave me a perm.”

Kaufman expressed his delight at the positive reactions from fans regarding his new hairstyle, calling it “always funny.”
Recently, a fan approached Kaufman on the street and suggested that the series should be titled “The Summer the Brother Turned Pretty,” which he found amusing. “I was like, ‘Let’s go,’” Kaufman told Us.

Post-perm, Kaufman mentioned that styling his hair before filming takes minimal effort. “I just wake up and walk out of the house,” he explained.
In season 1 of TSITP, Steven styled his brunette hair to the side, allowing some bangs to fall over his forehead.
In the next season, he let his hair grow slightly longer and parted it more down the center, with bangs pushed off his forehead.
The Summer I Turned Pretty airs Wednesdays on Amazon Prime Video.
