Sydney Sweeney Addresses Controversy Over Her Recent Advertisements
Sydney Sweeney is attentive to the discussions surrounding her campaigns.
In her recent WSJ. Magazine cover story, published on Wednesday, August 20, the 27-year-old actress discussed the buzz around her collaboration with Dr. Squatch. In the soap advertisement, it was humorously suggested that the men’s product be infused with her own used bathwater.
“I believe it’s crucial to stay updated on what people are saying, as it’s all part of a dialogue with the audience,” she explained. Dr. Squatch reported that the soap sold out in mere seconds.
“It was primarily women commenting on it, which I found intriguing. They all loved the concept of Jacob Elordi’s bathwater,” Sweeney remarked, alluding to a memorable scene from her Euphoria costar’s viral film Saltburn, where Barry Keoghan, 32, drank Elordi’s used bathwater.
When questioned about strategic thinking regarding her campaigns, Sweeney replied, “Yes. Very.”
Her cover story comes shortly after she garnered attention for her controversial “Great Jeans” ad with American Eagle, which she chose not to comment on to WSJ. In the advertisement, she boasted about how “great” her “genes” are, leading to an online discussion about eugenics.
American Eagle addressed the backlash through their Instagram account, stating, “Sweeney’s article comes weeks after she was making headlines for her controversial ‘Great Jeans’ ad with American Eagle.”
“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans,” the statement emphasized. “Her jeans. Her story.”
The message continued, “We’ll keep celebrating how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
