Sydney Sweeney’s Hairstylist Backs Her Up After Critic Mocks Her ‘Wig’
Sydney Sweeney has the support of her hairstylist.
The 28-year-old actress showcased her blonde hair in a stylish blown-out bob during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, December 2. Following the airing, content creator Blakely Neiman Thornton took to Instagram to critique her hairstyle, labeling it “the stiffest wig.”
“I don’t take pleasure in critiquing what I see, but I feel compelled to do so,” Thornton stated. Sweeney’s longtime hairstylist, Glen “Coco” Oropeza, quickly came to her defense in now-deleted comments, which Thornton later shared on his Instagram Story.
“It wasn’t a wig, but perhaps you should refrain from mentioning my girl’s name,” Oropeza, 35, reportedly responded. “You seem obsessed.”
Thornton replied to the hairstylist’s defense, saying, “Hi @glencocoforhair, It’s kind of you to jump in to protect your white employer who seems to have doubled down on eugenics. Just to clarify … the hairstyle on Fallon merely appeared to be a stiff wig. Please, carry on 😘.” (Thornton alluded to Sweeney’s viral American Eagle ad, which some interpreted as endorsing eugenics.)
Oropeza continued to reply to Thornton’s comment.
“Stiff where? You’re making a big deal … Take a breath, diva. You can keep trying to create a narrative, but we all know you just need clickbait because your content is OLD,” he wrote. “If you want attention, just say that. Imagine caring so much about a hairstyle you didn’t create and a woman who has no idea you exist. Goodnight.”
Thornton shot back, “I hope you’re getting overtime for being a sycophant after 9pm PST. If you are, I’d be happy to sign your timesheet. And just so you know, Black people are indeed tired … very much so … good luck with the rest of the press tour.”
The influencer shared a meme of Raven Simone laughing, captioning it, “Watching Sydney’s hairstylist unravel in the comments.” He added, “It’s 11pm and I’m in a petty mood.”
Sweeney first unveiled her bob last month at the Christy premiere during the AFI Fest. She later discussed her new look with The Hollywood Reporter in November.
“My hairstylist Glen Coco wanted to create something different, and I’m his little science experiment,” she expressed. “I love him so much that I let him cut and color my hair.”
She candidly revealed her initial hesitation about the bob.
“I was a bit anxious,” she admitted. “I think my long hair was like a security blanket. I always preferred it down and wavy. But now, I’m really loving it.”
Sweeney mentioned that she is discovering a “new version of” herself with her fresh haircut. “In the mirror, I’m like, ‘Ooh!’”
Her colorist, Jacob Schwartz, informed Vogue that the actress sought “a change” and lightened her “dark suede blonde” locks to a more vibrant shade to highlight “her eyes and features.”
“[Sydney] wanted a standout hair moment for the red carpet to promote her film, Christy,” he noted. “It seemed like the ideal time for something bold.”
