The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 4: Shocking Pregnancy Twist and Josh Peck’s Appearance
Tonight’s episode of The Last of Us kicked off with a bang.
With the introduction of new faces (hello, Jeffrey Wright), a surprising pregnancy reveal, a long-awaited hookup, and even Josh Peck making an appearance, there’s a lot to digest. And, in true HBO fashion, the drama still managed to make us tear up over Joel Miller’s (Pedro Pascal) fate.
Warning: Spoilers for The Last of Us ahead.
Peck, portraying a FEDRA agent, has the distinction of kicking off The Last of Us season 2, episode 4, which aired on Sunday, May 4. The opening scene is a flashback set in Seattle’s Quarantine Zone back in 2018.
His character narrates a story to fellow FEDRA officers when their intimidating sergeant (Wright) interrupts from the truck’s corner where they’re all cramped. The vehicle halts as members of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) emerge in the streets. The sergeant, who turns out to be Isaac Dixon, the current leader of the WLF, exits the truck and eliminates all the FEDRA officers, declaring his loyalty to the rebel militia.
In the present day, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced) continue their revenge-fueled journey through Seattle. They stumble upon some outdated items in a pharmacy before resuming their pursuit of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and her group.
As they explore Seattle, Ellie and Dina see Pride flags for the first time and ponder whether the locals are merely “optimists.” Eventually, they stop by a music store where Ellie finds a guitar and plays “Take on Me” by A-ha.
“All those lessons from Joel,” Ellie says to Dina after concluding the song. As she puts the guitar down, the camera lingers on the instrument, serving as a tribute to the late character. (Yes, it still stings.)
Meanwhile, in another part of Seattle, Isaac is torturing a captured member of the Seraphites—remember the religious group slaughtered last week?—as he continues the brutal turf war. As Dina puts it, “What the f*** is wrong with Seattle?”
Unsurprisingly, Ellie and Dina find themselves caught in the crossfire while searching for Abby. They discover dead WLF members (and even steal a radio) in an abandoned building, murdered by the Seraphites. Surviving WLF members stumble upon the bodies and assume Ellie and Dina are the culprits. After a heated skirmish, a swarm of Infected awakens, eager to devour anyone nearby.
In a bid to protect Dina, Ellie gets bitten again (that makes four bites throughout both seasons) as they seek refuge in a deserted hotel. Horrified, Dina points a gun at Ellie. Ellie needs to reveal that she’s immune.
“I promise — many times I wish this wasn’t the case — I’m going to wake up just as I am right now. Me,” Ellie explains. After a night filled with tears and little sleep, Dina eventually accepts her friend’s truth. Instead of reacting to the immunity revelation, Dina confesses a secret of her own.
“Ellie, I’m pregnant,” Dina says before kissing Ellie. The new couple shares a tender moment before confronting the gravity of their situation. Dina later confirms, after revealing several positive pregnancy tests from the pharmacy earlier, that she is carrying Jesse’s (Young Mazino) baby.
“So, we’re all having a baby. Holy s***,” Ellie exclaims. “I’m going to be a dad.”
Setting aside the romantic moment, they start tuning in to the stolen WLF radio and hear mentions of Nora (Tati Gabrielle), indicating she knows Abby’s whereabouts. The episode concludes with Ellie and Dina agreeing to complete their mission “together.”
