The Rookie Cast Hints at Wesley and Angela’s ‘Intense’ DA Race
All eyes will be on Wesley Evers and Angela Lopez as The Rookie‘s district attorney race intensifies next week.
“This is almost a culmination of a very intense storyline for both characters in the DA race,” Shawn Ashmore, who portrays attorney Wesley, shared exclusively with Us Weekly on Tuesday, March 17.
Ashmore, 46, mentioned that the episode airing on Monday, March 23, titled “Spy Games,” will showcase Wesley’s journey towards becoming the DA of Los Angeles, just two days before the election. During this period, he and his wife Angela (Alyssa Diaz) must unite against two former adversaries who threaten to undermine them.
“You’ll see both characters sweating a bit,” Ashmore hinted, disclosing that one guest star is someone close to Wesley, while the other is a villain personally connected to Angela.
The actor informed Us that fans can expect to see how Wesley and Angela “interact as a couple under pressure.”
As always, Ashmore emphasized that the couple is a “team,” ready to “jump into action and support each other.”
According to ABC, the forthcoming episode focuses on the FBI and LAPD collaborating on “a covert sting operation to safeguard Bailey [played by Jenna Dewan], while Wesley and Angela deal with marital tensions arising from a public scandal threatening his campaign.”
“What I love about this episode is it gives the audience a glimpse into their relationship in a fun way,” Ashmore stated to Us. “It highlights this moment in their lives — the climax of the DA race — while also bringing some past challenges to the forefront.”
Diaz, 40, exclusively told Us that viewers will witness Angela rising to the occasion to support her husband, even when faced with tests.
“She has to remain strong because he is her husband and the father of her children,” Diaz remarked. “He’s in a highly intense situation with many eyes on him, and she can’t afford to show any weakness.”
The actress further mentioned that when an old adversary re-emerges and makes allegations about Wesley’s past, Angela must put on a “strong face,” knowing the villain “tends to exaggerate.”
Diaz kept details under wraps about who is trying to disrupt Wesley and Angela’s relationship, hinting that the detective will “not let him get under her skin, especially during such a pivotal moment for Wesley.”
Ashmore, for his part, shared with Us that a crucial scene involving Wesley and someone from his past will significantly shift the episode’s direction.
“It’s a beautifully crafted, loaded, and deeply emotional scene,” Ashmore teased, noting that Wesley’s vulnerability and accountability may be “what swayed” the eventual outcome.
The Rookie airs on ABC Mondays at 10 p.m. ET. Episodes are available for streaming the following day on Hulu.
