TV Shows Canceled in 2025-2026: Which Ones Won’t Return for Additional Seasons?
The year 2025 has been harsh for fans of beloved TV shows, with many cancellations hitting hard.
Netflix severed ties with Girls5eva, despite rescuing it from cancellation previously. This musical comedy first debuted on Peacock in 2021, chronicling the lives of four women from a girl group who reunite to chase musical success after a brief period of fame.
Although Girls5eva was renewed for a second season, Peacock chose not to continue with additional seasons. Netflix picked it up for a third season, which turned out to be its last.
Sara Bareilles, Busy Philipps, Paula Pell, and Renée Elise Goldsberry comprised the show’s main cast. Following the news of its second cancellation, Philipps shared an emotional message.
“I am eternally thankful for this amazing show and these girls who became my sisters 5eva, for Netflix giving us a chance to perform together a little longer, and for everyone at Universal and Peacock who passionately supported our show,” the actress wrote on Instagram. “And of course, the brilliance of Meredith, Jeff, Eric, and my patron saint, Tina Fey.”
She continued, “I truly don’t know who I would be without this show and the immense joy it brought me during one of the darkest times of my life. I genuinely love what I do, even when it sometimes feels nearly impossible. Isn’t that what makes all good things in life worth it? Love you 5eva❤️.”
Another significant loss for television was Apple TV+’s Sunny. Based on the 2018 novel The Dark Manual, the series featured Rashida Jones as an American woman in Japan who receives a domestic robot after her husband and son go missing in a plane crash.
“I wish there was a bit more awareness about our series, to be honest,” Jones told The Hollywood Reporter in September 2024 regarding her now-canceled show’s reception. “I believe that [Sunny] is discovering its audience since people seem to enjoy it, and many have reached out to talk to me about it. What [Apple] definitely has is great taste, and they produce excellent shows.”
The actress praised the streaming service for its decision to have a weekly release schedule. “I know it’s somewhat old-fashioned, and not everyone utilizes it, but I do believe that format suits the show well,” Jones added. “Some viewers might prefer to wait until all the episodes are released, following their usual pace. However, I think there are numerous subtle details that one might want to reflect on before diving into the finale.”
Jones was also queried about the unanswered questions that linger.
“That’s definitely the intention, and it’s structured that way. I don’t believe we’re giving anything away by stating there are questions you’ll want answers to by the end,” she explained. “Did you feel unresolved, or were you satisfied with the conclusion?”
