UFC Fighter Alexandre Pantoja Sustains Horrific Elbow Injury Early in Bout
In a disappointing twist, the highly awaited UFC 323 championship match ended in less than 30 seconds.
Alexandre Pantoja — aiming to defend his title during the fight on Saturday, December 6, in Las Vegas — faced a loss against Joshua Van after a severe injury abruptly ended his contest.
Just 26 seconds into the fight, Pantoja attempted a kick but landed on his arm at an awkward angle, resulting in his elbow twisting unnaturally.
The disturbing injury disqualified Pantoja from the competition, awarding Van a TKO victory and the championship by default.
Following the match, Pantoja took to Instagram to inform his fans about his injury, expressing his disappointment while looking toward his recovery — no matter how long it takes.
“That’s what happens, accidents,” said the Brazilian fighter in an Instagram video. “When I arrived at the UFC today, I felt like I was in the best shape of my life. Seeing Joshua Van across the octagon, I believed I could finish him in the first round. That’s what I aimed to do… I feel so at home in the octagon. That’s my octagon, that’s my belt. That’s everything I’ve trained for to reach that moment.
Pantoja continued, “Joshua Van, winning this belt was destined for him tonight. Unfortunately, I couldn’t win it due to my injury today. … I will put in the effort. I trained hard throughout my life, and I will do so again to reclaim my title.”
Pantoja stated he will return to Brazil on Sunday to begin his rehabilitation and on Monday he will “start pursuing my dream again.”
“I appreciate all the messages,” he added. “Everyone knows who I am. I am a very respectful person. I prioritize my family above all. I will never speak ill of anyone. My focus is on working hard to bring the belt back home.”
Details about the injury continue to emerge, but UFC CEO Dana White revealed that Pantoja dislocated his shoulder, contrary to the footage showing his elbow turning at an odd angle.
“They popped his shoulder back in,” White clarified. “At first, I thought it was the elbow, but it was indeed the shoulder, and they have reset it backstage. MRIs will follow to check the ligaments and assess the damage.”
White noted that there is currently no timeline established for Pantoja’s return but indicated he “will require some time.”
Van mentioned he is already eager for a rematch with Pantoja once he recovers.
“This past week was all about survival. I was confident I would win, but I never wanted it to end this way,” Van stated. “As soon as [Pantoja] heals, I want to face him again. I have immense respect for him; he’s one of the greats of all time.”
He added, “Regardless of what comes next, I feel he deserves the opportunity. I will follow whatever the UFC decides, but I definitely want to have a rematch with him.”
