USWNT’s Sophia Wilson and NFL’s Michael Wilson Announce Expecting Their First Child

For soccer star Sophia Wilson and her husband, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson, “life keeps getting better.”

On Wednesday, March 5, Sophia and Michael shared exciting news via Instagram, revealing they are expecting their first child, accompanied by photos of their recent sonogram.

According to USA Today, Sophia and Michael first met in 2018 as freshmen at Stanford University.

Seven years later, they tied the knot in January, and now they are gearing up for parenthood.

In November 2024, Sophia mentioned to the Cardinals that alongside being a top soccer player, her “calling” is to become a mother.

“My career will have to pause while I am pregnant, so this timing is crucial,” she expressed. “[But] we have been waiting for this for a long time.”

As the season for Portland Thorns FC approaches this month, Sophia’s career pause is now officially in effect, fully backed by her team.

The soccer club extended a congratulatory message on X.

“Our Number 9+1,” the team shared on X. “We are thrilled to announce that [Sophia Smith] and her husband Michael are set to welcome their first child! The Thorns proudly stand by her in this wonderful new journey.”

Sophia Smith is set to join other soccer legends — such as Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe — as she leads the United States Women’s National Team in the upcoming World Cup later this month. The 22-year-old forward has represented the USWNT in multiple Women’s World Cups in the past, starting in 2016.

In that same conversation, the couple discussed how they maintain their relationship despite the lengthy periods apart necessitated by their demanding careers.

“It always comes back to the commitment we have to get through anything,” Michael remarked. “She is the most extraordinary person I’ve ever known, and our bond keeps me grounded because I know I won’t find anyone like her again.”
