What the Dawson’s Creek Cast Shared About Their Reunion
Dawson’s Creek wrapped up in 2003, and for over twenty years, fans have been hoping for a reunion — what are the cast members’ thoughts?
The original stars James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams have long hinted at the possibility. However, it wasn’t until August 2025 that they officially confirmed the reunion.
These actors, who portrayed teenagers exploring love, high school, and personal growth over six seasons, will host a one-night event in New York City on September 22. The eagerly anticipated gathering will feature a live reading of the WB pilot to raise funds for the F Cancer charity, particularly in support of Van Der Beek, who was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in 2024.
As fans prepare for this significant occasion, Us Weekly reflects on everything the cast has revealed and the hints they’ve dropped about a reunion throughout the years.
James Van Der Beek
In a March 2025 episode of the “Whine Down” podcast, Van Der Beek, who played Dawson Leery, shared, “I’ve been in touch with them lately, and it’s been wonderful.”
While he didn’t disclose the reason for reconnecting, he remarked, “It’s been so great to discuss our lives now, so many years later, and to reminisce about our shared experiences—it’s always a delight catching up with them.”
Katie Holmes
Holmes, who portrayed Dawson’s close friend and love interest Joey Potter, has yet to directly comment on a Dawson’s Creek reunion but dismissed the idea of a reboot in July 2022. “We’ve definitely discussed it over the years,” she told Screen Rant. “However, I believe the show uniquely captured that era in all of our lives.”
Nevertheless, Holmes will participate in the in-person reunion this September and has recently reconnected with Jackson to work on the upcoming trilogy, Happy Hours.
Joshua Jackson
Jackson, who played Pacey Witter, expressed in September 2021 that he found a Dawson’s Creek reunion in the style of that year’s Friends reunion on HBO unlikely. (In the Friends reunion, the cast gathered to discuss the show and share life updates.)
“Since the Friends cast were already adults when filming, it’s less surprising to see them nowadays,” Jackson noted in an interview with The Guardian. “If you put our mid-40s selves on a couch today, it might shock some fans.”
He joked, “Nobody wants to hear Pacey grunt while standing up.”
Michelle Williams
“We grew up in Capeside, and that bond will last a lifetime,” Williams stated in an August 2025 announcement about the WB reunion. “We wanted to gather around our dear friend James and show him that we are all here. We’ve always been here, and we always will be. I’m certain the fans of Dawson’s Creek feel the same.”
Busy Philipps
“We’re really trying to coordinate schedules, but some people have unmovable work commitments,” Philipps, who played Audrey Liddell, exclusively shared with Us Weekly in March 2025. “It’s like playing chess trying to align everyone’s availability. But I’m very hopeful we will all come together.”
She added, “Everyone is excited, and I’m thrilled to see James doing well — we’re all sending him our best wishes and prayers.”
Philipps later told Us in May 2025, “Everyone adores Dawson’s Creek, and I love it too,” noting the joy from fans seeing cast members “hanging out” recently.
Kevin Williamson
The creator of the show revealed during the 2019 TV Critics Association summer press tour panel for Tell Me a Story that he was “dying to work with Josh Jackson again,” emphasizing that this desire didn’t imply he was planning a reboot for Dawson’s Creek.
After the reunion was confirmed for September, Williamson expressed his excitement.
“I am thrilled to reunite with James, Michelle, Katie, Joshua, and the entire Dawson’s Creek family for such a special evening. Dawson’s Creek profoundly impacted my life,” Williamson stated in an August 2025 message. “What started as a personal narrative about a young man and his friends navigating life’s challenges evolved into something far greater than I ever envisioned.”
He added, “It fostered a lasting fandom and legacy globally. I am proud to be a part of it and to support our dear friend James as we continue facing life’s hurdles together.”
Mary-Margaret Humes
Humes, who portrayed Dawson’s mother Gail Leery, recounted feeling excluded when some cast members reunited for an Entertainment Weekly photo shoot in March 2018. In May 2019, she told Us that her TV husband, John Wesley Shipp, who played Mitch Leery, was less bothered by it.
“I took it a bit more personally than John because there were discussions about a possible reunion,” Humes explained to Us. “I had been active on Instagram, and I really felt that I was contributing to bringing a reunion to life—not just a photo opportunity but actually reviving the show.”
Humes mentioned that after seeing the EW cover, she expressed her disappointment at being left out on social media.
“I’m glad I spoke up because Katie reached out to me, James called me, Kerr [Smith] contacted me, and Kevin texted me,” she recalled. “It brought us closer together, and now there are talks about, in secret, of ‘Maybe we should do this.’ So, fingers crossed. I’m not privy to any more details than anyone else, but a group text has been circulating suggesting, ‘Maybe it’s time.’”
