Where Are Lauryn Licari and Her Mother Kendra Following the Cyberstalking Scandal?
Netflix’s Unknown Number: The High School Catfish delved into the story of Lauryn Licari, who was cyberstalked and harassed by her mother, Kendra Licari. So, what are they up to now?
The documentary, which debuted in August, detailed a harrowing case from Michigan in which Lauryn and her then-boyfriend, Owen McKenny, began receiving alarming text messages in 2020. The messages paused momentarily before resurfacing a year later, this time loaded with more severe threats.
Lauryn experienced up to 40 to 50 messages a day until the FBI intervened, uncovering that Kendra was the one orchestrating the harassment. Kendra was arrested and pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor—one for Lauryn and one for Owen. She was sentenced to 19 months in prison and was released in August 2024. Following her arrest, Kendra was prohibited from contacting her victims, including her own daughter.
Since her release in 2024, Kendra and Lauryn have not been able to meet in person. Although Lauryn initially hoped to stay connected with Kendra, her feelings shifted after sharing her story with Netflix.

How Did Kendra Get Exposed?
Back in 2020, Lauryn and Owen, both 13 years old, endured persistent cyberbullying. The catfish targeted Lauryn specifically regarding her relationship with Owen, leading them to wonder if the harasser was a classmate or an adult from their community in Beal City, Michigan.
Kendra, featured in the documentary, denied initiating the messages. She admitted to carrying out harassment on social media to provoke authorities into taking the original catfish threats seriously before they escalated further.
The school superintendent, Bill Chillman, had a contrasting view when he was interviewed for Unknown Number, labeling it a “cyber Munchausen’s case.”
“She wanted her daughter to need her in such a way that she was willing to hurt her, and this is the way she chose to do that, rather than physically making her ill, which is a hallmark of Munchausen’s behavior,” he remarked in the August 2025 documentary.
Where Is Kendra Now?
When asked about the distressing texts she sent urging Lauryn to harm herself, Kendra told the director of Unknown Number, “I can say I was not scared of her hurting herself.”
Owen and his mother, Jill McKenny, also appeared in the documentary, accusing Kendra of tormenting Lauryn out of jealousy over Owen. In turn, Kendra shared that she was raped at 17, attributing her troubling behavior to an undiagnosed mental illness rooted in her trauma.
“I didn’t want her to experience what I did, and I think that made it difficult for me to handle things,” Kendra reflected, expressing her fears about letting Lauryn mature and the potential dangers.
Lauryn, for her part, initially expressed in the documentary the desire to reconnect with her mother “when the time is right.”
“I hope my mom and I can rebuild our relationship because I feel like I’m missing a part of me,” she shared. “Now that she’s out [of prison], I want her to get the help she needs so that when we reunite, it won’t revert to how things were before.”
Lauryn added: “Being without that relationship is really hurting me. I believe that restoring our relationship would benefit us both immensely. I love her more than anything.”
Where Is Lauryn Now?
Following her mother’s arrest, Lauryn formed a closer bond with her father, Shawn Licari, who gained full custody. Currently, Lauryn is dating a new partner from high school and is planning to pursue a degree in criminology.
Director Skye Borgman shared insights with Netflix’s Tudum in August 2025, noting that Lauryn has engaged in “a lot of critical thinking” about her relationship with her mother since filming the documentary.
“She is beginning to realize that she can take charge, making all the decisions for herself and her relationship with her mom,” Borgman explained. “It will be fascinating to see where this leads Lauryn.”
Where Is Owen Now?
While Owen’s relationship with Lauryn ended before her mother was identified as their tormentor, they have had no contact since then.
“I see him in the hallways, but we don’t really interact at all,” Lauryn mentioned, to which Owen added, “I was angry at Lauryn. I don’t foresee us talking again in the future.”
Owen has since graduated from high school and is currently attending college in Michigan.
