Where Are They Now? The Cast of ‘The Lord of the Rings’
The acclaimed fantasy series by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, made its cinematic premiere in 2001 with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring — marking a significant moment in film history.
Mirroring Tolkien’s literary masterpieces, the films of the early 2000s chart the journey of hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) as he teams up with companions to eliminate the One Ring, ultimately striving to save Middle-earth from the clutches of the Dark Lord Sauron.
Featuring a star-studded cast, the film includes the talents of Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), and Andy Serkis (Gollum).
Following its successful release, directed by Peter Jackson, which grossed over $888 million globally, two additional installments were produced: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003).
A new Lord of the Rings television series premiered on Amazon Prime Video in September 2022. In July 2020, Wood shared with IndieWire that he is “super fascinated” by the new project and would “absolutely” be willing to cameo if invited.
