Which Broadcast TV Shows Have Yet to Be Renewed?
TV renewals and cancellations are steadily coming in ahead of upfronts week — but which shows remain in uncertainty?
ABC has been actively renewing several programs, including High Potential and Shifting Gears. However, Doctor Odyssey finds itself in a precarious position ahead of its season finale, with speculation that the series, led by Ryan Murphy, may be too expensive for additional seasons.
Doctor Odyssey centers on Joshua Jackson‘s character, Dr. Max Bankman, as he embarks on a journey to become the new ship’s doctor aboard the Odyssey, a cruise ship captained by Don Johnson. The show, which also features Phillipa Soo and Sean Teale, has been known for its boundary-pushing storylines and a rotating cast of celebrity cameos.
In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly in March, Jackson praised Murphy’s creativity, saying, “Ryan’s imagination is both prolific and bizarre, encompassing everything from the grotesque to the absurd, alongside his brighter and more uplifting shows. It’s incredible that all of this exists within the mind of one person.” He added, “I have long desired to work with Ryan.”
Jackson continued to praise the storytelling, stating, “Ryan described it as a sparkle. He emphasized, ‘Make sure my show sparkles.’ We’ve worked hard to ensure that this show shines, hoping that the joy we experience in bringing it to life translates to viewers.”
During the Disney Upfronts in May, President of Disney Television Group Craig Erwich provided insight into Doctor Odyssey‘s future. He mentioned, “Currently, Doctor Odyssey isn’t on our schedule. Ryan is very busy with multiple projects for us, such as 9-1-1, 9-1-1 Nashville, and All’s Fair on Hulu. We’re actively having creative discussions with him.”
He concluded: “I truly enjoy Doctor Odyssey; I find it to be a remarkably inventive show, and we’re doing everything within our power to support it. Ultimately, the decision lies with Ryan Murphy, depending on whether he wants to continue and if he believes there are more stories to share confidently.”
Also in the mix is Grosse Pointe Garden Society on NBC, which follows four members of a suburban gardening club hiding a deadly secret in the affluent Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe, Michigan. The cast includes Melissa Fumero, Aja Naomi King, AnnaSophia Robb, Ben Rappaport, Matthew Davis, Alexander Hodge, Nancy Travis, and Felix Wolfe.
