Which Chicago Fire Stars Will Return for Season 14, and Who Will Not?

Chicago Fire is experiencing some cast transitions, meaning not every actor will be back for season 14.

The One Chicago franchise has made headlines over the years due to frequent cast changes across all three shows: Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago P.D. Despite these numerous shifts, NBC’s president of program planning Jeff Bader has previously expressed confidence in the franchise’s future.

“Cast members come and go,” Bader stated in an interview with TVLine published in July 2024. “It’s intriguing. Each year brings changes, and every year someone asks the same question about the One Chicago universe. But those shows just keep thriving.”

Bader emphasized the ongoing success of the Chicago shows, adding, “We’re very pleased with how the Chicagos perform on Wednesdays. We have no plans to change anything on that night.”

Nonetheless, fans are anxious about their favorite characters on Chicago Fire following multiple cast exits hinted at for season 14.

“We’re expecting significant turnover,” showrunner Andrea Newman told TVLine in May 2025. “A lot of chaos is brewing in the CFD from the top down, with people being reassigned or let go. Next season will definitely bring hellos and goodbyes, that’s for sure.”

While not everyone will be back on Chicago Fire, the show cannot exist without Taylor Kinney’s character, Kelly Severide.

David Eigenberg

Although he was positioned as the next fire chief, Herrmann (Eigenberg) revealed to Mouch (Christian Stolte) in the season 13 finale that he would be returning to his role as a regular firefighter. Eigenberg is expected to reprise his role as Herrmann in season 14.

Eamonn Walker

Peter Gordon/NBC

Walker has portrayed Wallace Boden for 12 seasons before stepping back from the show. In May 2024, Deadline reported that Walker chose to officially step away after a short absence, having returned in season 13 after a year-long hiatus.

“We are thrilled to have our beloved Chief Boden back, and the episode, titled Post-Mortem, is a thrilling experience unlike any we’ve done before,” Newman mentioned in a March 2025 press release. “Told through flashbacks and unique perspectives, Chief Boden leads our team in investigating the how, who, and why of a disastrous firefight.”

Though Walker’s return in season 14 is uncertain, it hasn’t been ruled out.
