Who Is Amari, the Brother of Tristan Thompson?

Tristan Thompson has taken on the role of legal guardian for his younger brother, Amari.

Court records acquired by TODAY.com reveal that a judge from Los Angeles County Superior Court approved Thompson’s request for guardianship of Amari on February 26, 2024.

Following the passing of their mother, Andrea Thompson, in January 2023, Tristan filed for guardianship of the 17-year-old who lives with epilepsy.

Since their mother’s death, he has acted as the teen’s primary caregiver, as depicted in Season Four of “The Kardashians,” which showed Thompson and Amari residing at the home of ex-Khloé Kardashian. They have, however, since relocated.

Amari reappears in Season 6, Episode 9 of “The Kardashians,” when Thompson and Kardashian gather to celebrate Amari’s 18th birthday.

“Amari turning 18 is a significant milestone for him,” Kardashian remarked in the episode. “It’s an incredible achievement, and every moment we share with him is a blessing.”

While Amari appeared to be relishing the celebration, the atmosphere shifted when he suffered a “brief seizure” during the gathering, leading Kris Jenner to become emotional.

“Have you never seen one before?” Kardashian questioned her mother.

“No,” Jenner responded, drying her tears. “It’s just incredibly overwhelming.”

In her confessional, Kardashian shared that Amari sometimes endures “multiple seizures” a day, noting that while she has adapted to it, her mother has not.

“My mom is someone who always wants to help others and usually can solve problems, so in this instance, she feels terrible because it’s beyond her control, and she doesn’t know how to respond,” Kardashian explained.

“Today was tough. It was tough,” Jenner reflected in her confessional. “You feel helpless when someone is having a seizure, and there’s nothing you can do, but I’m grateful I was here. I’m grateful to be here for Amari and for Khloé.”

During the festivities, Jenner expressed her pride in Kardashian for being there for Amari throughout the years.

“I’m so proud of you. Truly, the way you’ve handled everything and embraced this situation has been so courageous. I love you,” Jenner remarked.

“I hope one day you’ll take care of me like this,” she teased.

“Of course,” Kardashian replied.

Why is Tristan Thompson his brother Amari’s caregiver?

Tristan Thompson assumed the role of Amari’s only caregiver after their mother passed away unexpectedly in January when Amari was just 16.

The finale of Season Three revealed that the Thompson brothers had moved in with Kardashian.

What condition does Amari have?

In the October 5, 2023, episode of “The Kardashians,” Khloé Kardashian stated that Amari has “the most severe type of epilepsy,” a neurological disorder characterized by seizures.

She mentioned that he had recently been hospitalized and would require physical therapy at home following the incident.

“He experiences the most severe type of seizures imaginable. Previously, he was having so many that it resulted in significant brain damage,” she explained. “That’s why he’s unable to walk, talk, or manage everyday activities.”

Amari turned 17 in July and appeared to still be residing with Kardashian at that time.

“Someone is 17 today!!!!” she wrote on Instagram, sharing a carousel of images featuring her mom, Kris Jenner, daughter True Thompson, and niece Dream Kardashian.

“Happy birthday, sweet Amari!!! We are all tremendously blessed to have been touched by an angel like you. You’re truly one of God’s greatest treasures.”

In an Instagram post, Tristan Thompson also shared a birthday tribute, writing, “Happy birthday to my sweet baby brother Amari! I will love you forever!”

Where do Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson stand now?

Kardashian and Tristan Thompson seemingly ended their relationship for good when she discovered that he had fathered a child with another woman in March 2021 while they were still together. The news came to light when the child’s mother, Maralee Nichols, filed a paternity lawsuit against Thompson.

In January 2022, Thompson publicly expressed remorse for the “heartache and humiliation” he caused Kardashian.

The ex-couple shares two children: daughter True, 6, and son Tatum, 2.

Throughout “The Kardashians,” Kardashian has consistently stated that she and Tristan Thompson are not reconciled.

Season Four depicts the couple discussing their dynamic as co-parents and former partners.

During one conversation, Kardashian acknowledged that while Tristan is a good father and beneficial to have around, he may have overstayed his welcome at her residence.

She humorously suggested that he might be intentionally delaying repairs on his house to linger longer.

“I feel like you’re over there poking little holes in the ceiling, like ‘Let’s cause more flood damage!’ so you can stay here longer,” she joked.

“I’m literally throwing cinder blocks on my roof,” he responded with laughter.

Later, Thompson reiterated that he loves Kardashian, referring to her as his “best friend,” and expressed regret for his past infidelities.

“Why do I meet my person, yet commit so many wrongdoings? Why put you through all of that?” he asked rhetorically.

During a separate interview with the show’s producers, Kardashian conveyed that she doesn’t doubt Thompson’s feelings for her.

“Tristan has said I’m his person. I’m not disputing that. But I’ve heard those words before, and it has angered me because it leads me to question why he treated me this way,” she explained. “It’s not as if it was a one-time mistake,” she added. “I believe in love, and I’m a hopeless romantic. However, that doesn’t erase my feelings about what happened.”

Returning to their conversation, she assured Thompson that he is family and she would always support him, especially during challenging periods.

“…In times of need, that’s when you come together, and I want to ensure we support each other for the long haul,” she stated, noting that this does not excuse the past mistakes he has made.

She emphasized that he needs to change for himself and not as a means to win her back.

“Not because there’s a reward at the end,” she pointed out. “We will be in each other’s lives forever because of our children, so I won’t fight that, but I will strive to make it as pleasant as possible.”

In another interview, she revealed that her “moral compass” guided her to support her ex during his time of loss.

“I’ve lost a parent. I would never wish that pain on anyone,” she reflected. “It doesn’t matter what you did to me. This situation transcends my hurt. My moral compass tells me to be a good person and to offer support when someone is in need.”
