Why Bobby Lee Believes His Character Was Abandoned in “And Just Like That”

Bobby Lee opened up about his belief regarding the absence of his character in the upcoming season 3 of And Just Like That.

“I think some of the woke elements of the show have been removed, and I might have been a part of that,” Lee, 53, stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly during San Diego Comic-Con on July 24. “I believe Sara [Ramirez] and a few others also didn’t return. They attempted to incorporate more minorities, but — honestly, I never watched the show.”

Us Weekly has reached out to HBO Max for their perspective.

Lee portrayed Jackie Nee, Carrie Bradshaw’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) podcast co-host, in the first two seasons of the Sex and the City spinoff. He mentioned to EW that he hasn’t been invited back for the currently airing season 3.

And Just Like That continues with SATC’s Carrie, Miranda Hobbs (played by Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte York (played by Kristin Davis) as they navigate life in New York City during their 50s. Notably, Kim Cattrall did not reprise her role as Samantha Jones.

While Lee was a delightful presence when Carrie focused on her podcast, the third season has shifted its focus to Carrie’s new novel. Consequently, Carrie’s podcast team, which included Lee’s Jackie, along with Ivan Hernandez’s Franklyn Silvias and Ali Stroker’s Chloe, did not return for this season.

Ramirez, who played Miranda’s love interest Che Diaz in the initial two seasons, has also exited the series before the third season. (The pair ended their relationship in a season 2 episode in July 2023, acknowledging their romance was a “trainwreck” but a “good trainwreck.”)

Karen Pittman, who portrayed Nya Wallace, Miranda’s professor and later friend, did not return for the current season either.

The third season has also introduced new characters, including Miranda’s brief romantic interest, Mary (Rosie O’Donnell), a Canadian tourist. Dolly Wells joined the cast as Miranda’s latest love interest, Joy.

Despite the limited two-season run, Lee expressed nothing but positivity towards the cast and crew.

“Sarah Jessica Parker is genuinely the kindest person I’ve ever encountered. She made me feel incredibly comfortable,” he reminisced. “I adore everyone involved. It was a blast. I hold no ill feelings toward anyone. You know what I mean? I’m kind. I always arrive punctually.”

Max’s effort to rejuvenate Sex and the City as And Just Like That has generated a plethora of headlines. The original Sex and the City premiered in 1998, centering on Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her romantic escapades in New York alongside her friends Charlotte (Kristin Davis), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Samantha (Kim Cattrall). The comedian humorously noted that being cast for the role was unexpected based on his background. “Honestly, I’m not sure why they selected me,” Lee admitted. “I was incredibly anxious about it because it didn’t really align with my usual style. But I went for it. I faced my fears.”

And Just Like That airs on HBO Max Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
