Why Was Yellowstone’s Monica Killed Off in Marshals? Here’s What Happened.

Yellowstone‘s spinoff Marshals has taken the drastic step of killing off Kelsey Asbille‘s character, Monica. What prompted this significant narrative choice?

In the Sunday, March 1 episode of Luke Grimes‘ new CBS show, it was revealed that Monica passed away due to cancer caused by toxins released on the Broken Rock reservation. This offscreen death sparked an intense reaction from Yellowstone fans, prompting Grimes, 42, and Marshals showrunner Spencer Hudnut to respond to the decision.

“The way that Yellowstone ended for Kayce was literally him riding off into the sunset,” Grimes shared with Entertainment Weekly following the series premiere. “Obviously, we can’t just watch this guy live out his dream. There’s gotta be some conflict.”

Grimes supported the choice to disrupt Kayce’s life.

While Kayce Dutton is set to have his own spinoff, all the buzz centers on his wife Monica’s absence in Marshals. Since its debut in 2018, Yellowstone has introduced fans to the fictional Dutton family, owners of Montana’s largest ranch. Initially, Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Monica (Kelsey Asbille) were at the heart of the storyline.

“Something’s gotta happen that obstructs his ideal life,” he continued. “Otherwise, why would he take a badge? The last time we saw him, he was tossing that badge in a field. Is he really going to go retrieve it?”

Hudnut argued that Monica’s death serves a bigger purpose by highlighting real-world issues, stating, “It was crucial to honor that character. Her passing is a way to bring attention to genuine challenges faced by reservations.”

He added: “Her death is what motivates [her son] Tate to attend the rally, which in turn leads Kayce there. Her spirit and presence will be felt throughout the series, guiding Kayce’s journey. She’s integral to who Kayce Dutton is.”

In a separate interview, Hudnut elaborated on why Monica was selected to meet her end.

“Kayce had such a fulfilling conclusion in Yellowstone,” he explained to TV Line. “His dreams were finally realized. As we strategized about how to continue Kayce’s story, it became clear that he needed a wake-up call. Tragically, Kayce often finds himself in dire situations, and something bad was bound to happen. Ultimately, it turned out to be Monica.”

Despite potential criticism, Hudnut remained firm in his support of the fictional character’s death.

“To me, Monica is a guiding force for Kayce in this first episode, helping him navigate his new path,” he said. “If you break it down, Tate goes to that rally to honor his mother, and Kayce follows to protect him. Without Monica, Kayce wouldn’t have found himself in that situation or sought this new direction.”

Marshals hinted at Monica’s unexpected death — but what clues foreshadowed Kelsey Asbille’s absence? The Paramount Network series introduced viewers to Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Monica (Asbille), who were pivotal throughout the storyline. Initially, after working as a teacher on the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, their relationship evolved significantly.

Paramount Network’s Yellowstone, which aired from 2018 to 2024, showcased Kayce and Monica as core characters. After collaborating with Asbille, 34, for numerous years, Grimes shared how he broke the news of her character’s fate.

“I was heartbroken for myself as well as for [Kelsey]. It was daunting to think about what it would be like to continue without her. Kelsey has become one of my closest friends,” he disclosed to TVLine. “She’s the most extraordinary actor I’ve ever worked with, down-to-earth, kind, and sweet to every other cast member and crew.”

The actor personally informed his former onscreen love about Monica’s fate.

“I gathered the courage to call her, anxious to see how she felt about it. We had a great chat,” he concluded. “In true Kelsey fashion, she handled the news like a professional and completely understood. She will be just fine. She’s incredibly talented, beautiful, and fantastic. Securing roles won’t be an issue for her.”

Marshals airs on CBS Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.
