WWDITS Cast Addresses Burning Questions About the ‘Perfect’ Series Finale
What We Do in the Shadows may be finished for good, but the cast will forever cherish the memories — and a few keepsakes from the set.
“I took quite a bit,” Harvey Guillén, who portrayed Guillermo, shared exclusively with Us Weekly ahead of the series finale on Monday, December 16. “I collected some of [Guillermo’s] sweaters. … I’m a huge collector, and I snagged a few of the lamps from Nandor’s room that now reside in my guest house, matching the vibe perfectly.”
Mark Proksch, who played the energy vampire Colin Robinson, mentioned that he occasionally saved items he thought fans might appreciate later or that could be donated to charity. However, he also kept some treasures for himself, including a locket — featuring a picture of Vanessa Bayer’s character, Evie — which appears in the finale. (Colin briefly dated Evie, another energy vampire, in season 1.)
“I ended up giving that locket to Vanessa,” Proksch, 46, told Us, humorously adding that much of the vampires’ décor doesn’t align with his home’s style. “Stuffed beavers and vampire art don’t really fit with my aesthetic.”
Kavyan Novak, who played Nandor, took home his character’s portrait, while Kristen Schaal, also known as The Guide, kept the Guillermo frog and the portrait of Paul Reubens that featured in season 1 when the late actor appeared on the show.
While fans are heartbroken that WWDITS has come to an end, the cast feels content with how the finale concluded their stories. (The documentary crew stopped filming the vampire squad, but Nandor and Guillermo decided to continue working together as crime fighters.)
“I think it’s a fantastic way to conclude all of these character arcs, providing something entertaining for the viewers,” said Guillén, 34. “It was a perfect ending for a perfect series.”
Proksch agreed, emphasizing that the timing was right to end the show. “The risk is extending a show beyond its lifespan, keeping it on life support,” he explained. “This is a series where we all enjoy working together. The scripts are genuinely funny. You can fall into complacency and overstay your welcome simply because you’re enjoying it, so I think wrapping up after six seasons is the ideal way to finish, while it’s still making people laugh.”
Some fans still hope for a movie featuring the gang, similar to Entourage or Sex and the City, but the cast is divided on this idea (and Proksch pointed out there was already a What We Do in the Shadows movie in 2014 that inspired the series).
Novak, 46, stated the likelihood of another movie is “slim to none,” but Schaal, also 46, remains optimistic. “There will definitely be a movie. You heard it here first!” she declared to Us.
Guillén, for his part, would be open to a film — just not anytime soon. “We could definitely revisit these characters in a few years and see where they’ve landed,” he said. “I’m all for that.”
However, Nandor and Guillermo will not be exploring a romantic relationship. The finale dashed the hopes of fans wishing for a kiss between the two before the series concluded. Once again, the cast is divided in their thoughts regarding the relationship, with Schaal expressing a desire to see them kiss, while Guillén supported the more platonic conclusion.
“At the end of the day, they ended up together,” he said about the conclusion, which depicted Guillermo and Nandor descending into the depths in Nandor’s newly renovated coffin. “We need to normalize relationships between same-sex friends that are not sexual and acknowledge that you can have a deep friendship and care for someone without it being romantic. And that’s perfectly fine.”
Guillén pointed out that even though the kiss didn’t happen, fans essentially got what they wanted: Nandor and Guillermo riding off into the sunset.
“I’m the first to champion queer love,” Guillén added. “But I believe their love is evident. They ended up together. You got what you wished for! They were literally in a coffin together, plummeting down to a secret lair. They became partners. If you truly love someone, isn’t that what you desire? Just to have them in your life every day? They ended up together, and I’m pleased with how everything turned out.”
All six seasons of What We Do in the Shadows are now available for streaming on Hulu.
