Young Grandparents: Emily Maynard and Other Celebrities Who Welcomed Grandparenthood Early

While many people expect to embrace grandparenthood later in life, a fortunate few, including some celebrities, have the opportunity to become young grandmas and grandpas.

Celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg, Jim Carrey, and Mick Jagger all welcomed their first grandchild before turning 55. In January 2026, former Bachelorette Emily Maynard celebrated becoming a grandma at 39 after her oldest daughter, Ricki, gave birth at the age of 20.

Goldberg’s daughter, Alexandrea Martin Dean, was only 16 when she became pregnant. “It wouldn’t have been my first choice for her, but I appreciated that she felt confident enough to share it with me,” Goldberg remarked to the Los Angeles Times back in 1989.

Goldberg’s granddaughter Amara Skye Dean was born on November 13, 1989 — coincidentally, the same day as her grandma’s birthday. (Alexandrea also has two children with her former husband, Bernard Dean.)
