Jamie Lee Curtis Confirms Remake of Murder She Wrote Is On the Way
Get ready for a trip to Cabot Cove because Jamie Lee Curtis is set to take on the legendary role of Jessica Fletcher in a new Murder, She Wrote project.
“Oh, it’s … happening,” Curtis, 66, shared with Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday, July 23, when asked about the likelihood of her stepping into the shoes of Jessica Fletcher, a role originally played by Angela Lansbury, for a Murder, She Wrote remake.
While Curtis confirmed that the project is indeed happening, she did not specify whether it will be a television reboot or a film adaptation. “We’re just a minute away. But yeah, very excited. Very excited,” she added.
The actress, who recently reunited with Lindsay Lohan for the sequel to Freaky Friday, titled Freakier Friday, kept details about the Murder, She Wrote project under wraps.
“I’m keeping my excitement in check until we start shooting,” Curtis explained, adding, “I have a couple of other commitments first, then I’ll really enjoy that work.”
Lansbury, who hailed from the U.K., was a beloved icon both abroad and in the U.S. during her nearly 80-year career. (Lansbury passed away in October 2022 at the age of 96.)
While many remember the late actress as the voice of Mrs. Potts in the 1991 classic Beauty and the Beast or for her Broadway performances, countless Americans will always associate Lansbury with the clever mystery writer-turned-amateur detective Jessica Fletcher a.k.a JB Fletcher on Murder, She Wrote.
“She’s a feisty broad, much more so than I am. She’s nosey, she’s perceptive,” Lansbury remarked about the character in a 1996 60 Minutes interview. “She was athletic. She was fun. She wasn’t a prude. She was outgoing. She was private. She was everything.”
Murder, She Wrote first premiered in 1984, following professional writer and former teacher Jessica Fletcher (Lansbury) as she used her wit, charm, and investigative skills to solve mysteries in her quaint town of Cabot Cove, Maine.
As the series progressed — spanning 12 seasons — Jessica traveled globally, encountering murder at every turn. She solved every case, big or small, always with a smile.
Lansbury won four Golden Globes and received 12 Emmy nominations for her outstanding work on the show before it concluded in 1996. Murder, She Wrote continues to resonate with fans as reruns regularly air on the Hallmark Channel and other networks.
Lansbury also starred in multiple Murder, She Wrote movies, which may influence how Curtis approaches her new role; only time will reveal how it unfolds.
