Meredith Brooks’ ‘Bitch’ Turns 28: What’s She Up to Now? (Exclusive)
Meredith Brooks remains a multifaceted artist, embodying a blend of influences and styles.
Nearly three decades after her iconic ’90s track “Bitch,” the artist expresses gratitude for its enduring resonance with listeners.
“I’m honored, and I believe it’s due to our evolution over 25 years. Hopefully, people have become more enlightened,” Brooks, 67, shared exclusively with Us Weekly. “The song draws from Jungian psychology’s concept of the shadow self. Nowadays, people recognize their inner child, saint, sinner, and more. … It’s something they connect with deeply.”
Recently, artists like Brandi Cyrus have put their own spin on the 1997 classic with a remix. Additionally, Austin Butler is set to perform the song in his upcoming film, Caught Stealing.
Brooks believes even more collaborations are on the horizon.
“It’s amazing, and I’ve been waiting for this moment,” Brooks joked with Us. “I used to say, ‘Oh, this is my son’s college fund.’ But the landscape has changed with platforms like Spotify keeping the music alive, alongside social media.”
While Brooks used to have strict criteria for covers of her song, she’s become more open over time.
Thanks to the growing audience discovering her music annually, Brooks notes that new fans are exploring her entire discography.
“Interestingly enough — with Spotify and social media — I’ve noticed that more people are familiar with my other songs today,” she mentioned. “Back then, many didn’t even recognize it was my song despite charting in the top 10 with [radio host] Rick Dees. We lacked the social media buzz back then, and I genuinely appreciate that now.”
While Brooks actively shares on her Instagram, much of her content reminisces about the ’90s musical landscape.

She keeps her “young adult” son away from social media but proudly mentions, “He’s part of the family business.”
“I need his approval for any photo I share,” Brooks laughed. “I’ll post a throwback from when I worked with Katy Perry holding him as a baby. That was two decades ago. … Motherhood has been the most rewarding journey of my life.”
In addition to her role as a mother, Brooks actively mentors emerging artists and produces behind the scenes. Residing in Los Angeles, she is also penning a book about her life.
“I’m not sure if I’ll find the courage to publish it,” she teased. “It’s my journey from a small town in Oregon to achieving a massive global hit, and it’s still thriving. I’m considered the queen of resilience by my friends.”
Perhaps the delay in finishing the book stems from the fact that her musical career is still vibrant.
“I can’t disclose certain details, but I’m collaborating with various artists, and there’s a strong desire for secrecy, which I find amusing given our social media culture,” she chuckled. “But there’s more to come.”
