Brian Cox’s Kilt Wardrobe Mishap Leaves Audience Surprised
Red carpet? Check. Scottish pride? Check. Underwear? Not quite. Brian Cox made a fashionable entrance at the Toronto Film Festival in a kilt, but things got a tad too traditional during a Q&A session.
The 79-year-old actor proudly showcased his heritage, but it seems he forgot his modesty during the much-anticipated premiere of Glenrothan, his directorial debut, on Thursday, September 11.
Audience members reportedly noted that he had opted for a free-spirited experience by going commando during a Q&A held at Roy Thomson Hall.
“Is it that bad?” the Succession star posed, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, before teasingly adding, “Or that good?”
“You should wear the kilt the right way. It’s meant to give you a sense of freedom, and it’s a wonderful feeling,” Cox remarked after adjusting his posture.
The actor was styled in a dark charcoal grey tweed jacket over a black dress shirt accented with a bolo tie, complemented by a dark vest with silver buttons, a traditional black kilt, and a striking fur sporran adorned with a prominent silver cantle.
Cox plays Sandy in Glenrothan, a tale about two estranged brothers who reconnect in their homeland following a tumultuous encounter with their father during their mother’s funeral.
While co-stars Siobhan Redmond and Alan Cumming were absent from the 2025 TIFF event, Alexandra Shipp and Shirley Henderson were in attendance.
In another humorous moment at the event, Cox jokingly called out to Glenrothan producer Neil Zeiger in the audience for convincing him to wear a kilt.
“Whose bright idea was it to don these f***ing kilts?” Cox jested, according to THR. “Certainly not mine. This was the producer’s doing. They always find a way to mess with you, don’t they?”
“You’re probably wearing undergarments,” Cox said to Zeiger, 75, who was also sporting a tartan kilt and confirmed that Cox’s statement was correct.
