David, Christine Brown’s Husband, Claims Polygamy Harmed Sister’s Mental Health
Christine Brown’s spouse, David Woolley, opens up about the problems he perceives with polygamy on Sister Wives, sharing how it has impacted his sister.
“I’ve always looked down on it,” David, 61, shares in an exclusive preview from Us Weekly for the Sunday, November 9 episode of the TLC show.
Having married former polygamist Christine, 53, in October 2023, David reflects that seeing his siblings’ choices in this lifestyle has changed his perspective.
“My oldest sister was left mentally damaged from it, from the nonsense her husband put her through,” David claims, referring to his sister who practiced polygamy.
Christine, who separated from Kody Brown in November 2021 after over 20 years of spiritual marriage, has openly discussed her experiences with polygamy. In the upcoming episode, it’s David who articulates concerns with the practice and how men purportedly treat their wives.
“So do you believe that in polygamy, the man is a major flaw?” Christine asks David in the clip. He replies, “Absolutely. That’s a significant flaw right there.”
Christine recalls David mentioning that men in polygamy “enjoy the attention” and “like when their wives compete for them.”
“Oh, they thrive on the conflicts. They enjoy the rivalry between the women,” David asserts, claiming that “most” of the men he has encountered share this view.
David vocally criticizes polygamous patriarchs, alleging, “They exert control over the women by saying, ‘If you disobey me, I will turn to another one.’ And I was like, fine, ‘I can take you in.’”
Moreover, he states that polygamy serves to “dominate women,” telling Christine, “It’s fundamentally wrong.”
Janelle Brown, however, shares in the preview that she finds it problematic to generalize the entire religion. (Janelle, 56, was formerly one of Christine’s sister wives before both left Kody, 56. Janelle confirmed her split from him in December 2022, followed by Meri Brown, who verified her separation from Kody in January 2023.)
“While there are many tragic stories in polygamy, there are also such stories in monogamy,” Janelle remarks in the teaser. “It’s perilous to generalize an entire group based on one observed experience.”
Close to Christine and David, Janelle acknowledges that the “secrecy and lack of empowerment for women” within polygamy has permitted these issues to “flourish.”
She adds, “That was part of the reason we decided to go public. We wanted to put an end to that.”
When Sister Wives debuted in 2010, Kody had three wives: Meri, 54, Janelle, and Christine, while he was courting Robyn Brown. In the first season, Kody and Robyn, 47, entered into a spiritual marriage. Four years later, Kody legally divorced his first wife Meri to marry Robyn legally and adopt her three children from a previous marriage.
Following the dissolution of Kody’s first three marriages, he and Robyn opted for a monogamous lifestyle.
Sister Wives airs on TLC every Sunday at 10 p.m. ET.
