Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw Celebrate 50 Years of Marriage and Faith

As they approach their 50th wedding anniversary, Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw are sharing insights into their successful marriage, their faith, and more in an exclusive interview.

“We’ve cherished every year of our journey together — every decade, every significant moment, from birthdays to holidays,” Robin, 72, tells Us in a special joint interview with her husband. “This anniversary feels like a monumental achievement for us, and we’re genuinely proud of it.”

Dr. Phil, 75, and Robin elaborated on the principles that help maintain their enduring partnership.

“Just ask yourself what small action you can take today to enhance their life. It doesn’t have to be grand; it’s the little gestures that accumulate,” he explains. “Over time, small actions yield significant results — emphasizing that you’re putting your partner first.”

How do you both feel as you prepare to celebrate 50 years of marriage?

Robin: I feel incredibly emotional. I hope I don’t cry throughout this journey because it has been a profoundly beautiful time for us. I have discussed it a lot over the past year, as I believe it’s a significant milestone, and we’re genuinely proud of what we’ve achieved.

Dr. Phil: It’s overwhelming to think about because I don’t feel old enough to have been married for 50 years. I don’t sense any change from how I felt at 50. It feels like time has flown by.

Can you take us back to when you first started dating? How did you meet?

Robin: I love this question!

Dr. Phil: I wish you hadn’t brought it up.

Robin: We initially met because he has a sister who I attended high school with. We were the same age, not best friends but friendly enough. After graduation, we crossed paths again.

She mentioned she was dating a pilot from the Air Force base in town and suggested a double date with his roommate, which turned out to be Dr. Phil. Unfortunately, the pilot got stuck somewhere, so I was left without a date.

So Robin’s sister decided to have a quick dinner with her new husband, Doug—who later became our brother-in-law. She mentioned, “Just be quiet, my brother is sick.” I had no idea she had a brother!

While getting water in the kitchen, I walked past and saw this brother watching TV. He looked up and asked, “Who are you?” so our initial interaction wasn’t very warm. But he did invite me to sit and watch the movie with him, and that’s how it began.

Dr. Phil: I didn’t mean to sound so abrupt.

Robin: He was quite grumpy. I actually asked him, “Are you always this rude?”

Dr. Phil: We did go out the very next night.

Robin: He asked me out the following evening, which became our first date, and we’ve been together since.

Did you realize immediately that each other was The One?

Robin: As much teasing as I give him about our first night, it was actually love at first sight for me. I just knew I was going to marry him from that moment. Despite his rough exterior, I sensed a gentle side beneath.

Dr. Phil: I wasn’t feeling well; I had a “man cold.”

When I first saw Robin, I thought, “Am I imagining this? It doesn’t feel real.” She walked through the room, and I knew we had some cosmic connection, which is why I asked her out the next night.

Robin: We’ll never agree on this part!

Dr. Phil: As we were walking past a church, she casually asked, “What are your thoughts on marriage?” In that moment, I looked at the church doors and thought, “Holy cow!”

Robin: That conversation happened on our third date, not the first.

Dr. Phil: No way; it definitely happened on the first date.

Robin: I was serious from the outset. I needed to know how he felt about marriage because I wasn’t prepared to waste my time.

After getting engaged on Valentine’s Day, you tied the knot six months later. Were you both eager to finally start your life as a married couple?

Dr. Phil: Clearly, we made the right choice since it’s been 50 years, and we’re still together with two grown sons and four grandchildren.

Robin: Being grandparents has put us in what I refer to as the dessert phase of our lives. It’s genuinely the best phase; it feels like we’re having dessert every day.

What do you remember most about your wedding day?

Robin: We joke about our wedding now because we were so financially strapped. Both of us grew up that way, but we made our ceremony unique to us. My wedding dress cost $100, which I had to put on layaway, paying $5 each week. He wore a white tuxedo, and to this day, I tease him about that choice!

We tied the knot in our church chapel with a small reception featuring punch and cookies. Since we couldn’t afford a professional photographer, our family and friends took pictures.

Does the wedding date hold any special meaning?

Dr. Phil: Before we married, I mentioned I was pursuing my master’s degree in psychology because it was essential for our future. I managed to graduate on August 14, 1976, the very same day we got married. Talk about timing!

What about your honeymoon?

Dr. Phil: We honeymooned in Juarez, Mexico, and stayed in a vast room that resembled a small suite. Then, we headed to California where part of our honeymoon involved attending The Price Is Right live show. We still have the name tags from that experience. Later, I even had the honor of presenting Bob Barker when he retired.

Have you thought about celebrating with another ceremony 50 years later?

Robin: We haven’t given it much thought. I wonder why I didn’t put you in a stylish black tux and find a lovely dress instead of putting one on layaway? We haven’t felt the need because we’re incredibly proud of our 50 years together. Every anniversary, we enjoy a wedding cake as part of our tradition.

I cherish that one ceremony and how far we’ve come since.

Dr. Phil: Her wedding dress was $100 and her ring was $315. Yet, it’s fascinating to see people spend millions on weddings that end in a year. We spent less than $500 on everything, and we’re still here after 50 years — an incredible return on investment.

What significant challenges have you faced together?

Dr. Phil: Every relationship has its challenges and how much you invest is crucial. The scariest moment in my life was when our second son, Jordan, was just 12 and diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in his leg. They had to perform surgery and insert artificial bone. That was one of the most terrifying moments of my life.

Robin: Nothing compares to the challenges faced with your children. When our first son was born, at just 3 weeks old, he required surgery because his stomach was closing off. It was a very trying time.

How has your faith strengthened your bond during these trials?

Robin: Both of us possess a strong faith that we lean on daily, through both trials and joyful moments. We believe every experience, whether good or bad, is part of God’s loving plan, and we don’t question it.

Dr. Phil: Raising our boys in a faith-oriented home has been crucial. I’ve consistently emphasized this through prayer and open conversations, and now both of them are fathers themselves.

I am extremely proud of how they’ve embraced their roles and established a legacy.

After marriage, Dr. Phil’s career took off. How did you two manage that success together?

Robin: I’ve always believed Philip is exceptionally talented, and when he got this opportunity, I was completely supportive. We all felt he needed to share his wisdom and insight with a broader audience.

Being in the limelight invites public scrutiny. What is one major misconception others might have about your relationship?

Dr. Phil: It’s not easy, but seeking validation from strangers isn’t something I need. While we’ve been the subject of numerous stories, particularly about divorce, we’ve been together for 50 years without ever separating or discussing divorce.

Robin: The only time I visited a courthouse was when I was serving as the national spokesperson for CASA [Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children], not because of our marriage.

The only frustration for me was the unflattering photos they’d publish. I’d get so irritated when they picked bad pictures. I’ll never forget a time I finally got a beautiful shot—I made a fantastic dinner that night!

What do you think would surprise people about you as individuals and as a couple? What does a typical Friday night entail for you?

Robin: On a typical Friday night, he works hard all day and plays tennis in the evenings. We have a tennis court in our Dallas home, and after, he comes in and we order food from a restaurant we love — I don’t cook anymore! I used to for 40 years, but now I prefer to let him manage that.

He has food apps on his phone that he wants me to use, but I refuse because I don’t want to be responsible for dinner!

Dr. Phil: We truly enjoy our home. While we love being with friends, we are also happy to be home alone. We are more homebodies than anything. We still own a home in Beverly Hills as well as our place in Texas, but you won’t see us on the red carpet much — we graciously decline most invitations.

If we go out, it’s usually very low-key.

What about for your anniversary?

Robin: He’s taking me to Paris for our anniversary!

Dr. Phil: No pressure right? But we really enjoy each other’s company, and we often find joy at home. We’ve become unofficial caretakers in our community for some neighborhood cats. At one point, we had 16 cats visiting us!

We quickly realized we needed to manage this! We captured them all and had them spayed or neutered — now we have several food and water dishes set up outside, along with heaters and fans for them.

And you’re still active in your careers?

Dr. Phil: Absolutely. The industry is shifting more towards digital media, I have my linear network, Envoy TV, but everything is expanding into the digital realm. My anticipation has been exceeded beyond my expectations, especially with the rapid growth we’ve been experiencing.

Robin, what has been the best part of supporting your husband in his professional endeavors?

Robin: I have always maintained that my role is to provide support. I never sought to be an expert on the show; I participated as a wife and mother. Any contribution I made came from simply being myself.

Dr. Phil: I think she’s underestimating her role. A significant part of my audience comprises women — mothers and wives — and Robin has always represented that feminine perspective. She has been essential as an advocate against domestic violence for women and children, contributing greatly to the development of the Dr. Phil brand.

Dr. Phil: Through Robin’s advocacy work, passing her wisdom onto others has rendered the journey rewarding. I’ve learned so much and have no intention of stepping down.

After 50 years together, I hope we set an example of resilience for others facing struggles. We don’t claim to be perfect, but perhaps our story can inspire others.

You remain incredibly busy!

Dr. Phil: My career is something I get to actively pursue, not something I feel obligated to do. I genuinely look forward to each day ahead, and Robin has supported me through every step of my journey, truly invaluable.

If you could give your younger selves one piece of relationship counsel, what would it be?

Robin: The advice I’d share with my younger self would be to not bring past relationship habits into my marriage. I was somewhat spoiled as a child, so pouting worked for me to get my way. But that strategy didn’t sit well with Dr. Phil.

Dr. Phil: I wish I could have advised myself to practice more patience, as that’s not my strong suit. I’m very timid socially, even though I’m patient in my professional life. I expect things right away.

What are some secrets you’ve embraced to maintain a lasting marriage?

Dr. Phil: In marriage, you receive what you contribute. Every morning, reflect on how you can enhance your partner’s life. It’s not about grand gestures—sometimes it’s just about clearing the dishes off the table.

Robin: A crucial element that has contributed to our 50 years is that we had deep conversations before marriage about the life we envisioned together. We became vulnerable and understood each other’s triggers. Over these years, I’ve consciously opted not to press those buttons.

Dr. Phil: Coming from a very dysfunctional background, I value peace profoundly.

Robin: Knowing what triggers your partner’s frustration and purposely doing it isn’t wise. I’ve discovered what makes him happy and choose to pursue that every day.
