Travis Kelce Shares His Thoughts on the Chiefs’ Struggling Playoff Chances Following Loss
As the NFL regular season comes to a close, Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs are facing a significant challenge if they aim to make the playoffs.
Their situation became more precarious on Sunday, December 7, when they suffered a 20-10 defeat against the Houston Texans. In that game, Kelce, 36, dropped a crucial pass late in the fourth quarter, leading to an interception that ultimately sealed Houston’s victory.
“Looking at the playoffs, this is a tough reality,” he shared with his brother, Jason Kelce, on the December 10 episode of their “New Heights” podcast. “It’s a disappointing feeling, especially after dropping the ball late in the game.”
With a record of 6-7 for the season and four games remaining, the Chiefs only have an 11 percent likelihood of making the playoffs, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.
“It’s been a frustrating couple of days,” Travis reflected. “You invest so much effort hoping for positive results, and for whatever reason, the little things seem off—it’s about discipline. I felt like I had the answers in previous seasons, but this year, those answers are elusive.”
Jason, 38, defended his brother after the late-game error, emphasizing that the catch was challenging. He also inquired about the team’s strategy for the final stretch of the season, given the Chiefs must win all their games for a chance at the playoffs.
“At this point, we don’t have full control over our destiny,” Travis acknowledged. “There are things we need to happen beyond just winning all our games. We have the [Los Angeles] Chargers coming in next, and we need to focus on that.”
Following the Texans game, Travis faced considerable criticism, as it was statistically his worst performance of the season. In addition to the dropped pass, he recorded only one reception for eight yards—both of which are season lows.
Cameras captured his dejection on the sidelines, and he chose not to address the media after the game.
“I’m committed to giving my all at work, and every game is critical,” Travis told his brother. “It’s disheartening, but we have four games left, and I will pour my heart out for these guys because they deserve it. Chiefs Kingdom, you all deserve that, and we’re determined to keep pushing forward.”
Jason also queried what adjustments the Chiefs need to implement in their remaining four games to salvage the season. Travis’ response addressed nearly all facets of the game.
“In critical moments toward the end of games, we need to perform. Dropped passes and missed blocks in key situations can lead to significant plays. And we need to score touchdowns; field goals won’t suffice in this league.”
