Meet Matt Lauer’s Children: Sons Jack and Thijs and Daughter Romy
It has been eight years since Matt Lauer stepped back from the public eye due to allegations of sexual misconduct. Throughout this period, his three children have largely remained out of the public glare.
Lauer tied the knot with Dutch model Annette Roque in 1998. Together, they welcomed sons Jack and Thijs, along with their daughter Romy.
Following the misconduct allegations made public in 2017, Lauer was dismissed from NBC, where he had served as a host for over 20 years. (He faced accusations from a female colleague regarding inappropriate conduct during NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, three years earlier.)
In a statement issued at the time, Lauer expressed that he was “truly sorry” for the “pain I have caused others by my words and actions.” However, the repercussions of the scandal severely impacted his career and romantic relationship.
Roque initiated divorce proceedings in July 2019, and since then, Lauer has worked diligently to reconnect with his children. “He is on good terms with his kids, which is what mattered most to him,” an insider exclusively shared with Us Weekly in April 2024. “This wasn’t always the case post-divorce, but now he has a solid relationship with them.”

Jack Lauer
Lauer and Roque welcomed their firstborn, son Jack, in June 2001. “Becoming a father provided me with perspective; it added balance to my life,” Lauer shared with Good Housekeeping in 2007.
The following year, Lauer informed his Today co-hosts that Jack was a “sports fanatic,” with whom he frequently attended games in New York City. They have been seen at both New York Knicks and New York Rangers games over the years.
“All he cares about is sports. Baseball in the summer, basketball in the winter, football in the fall. He’s passionate about it,” Lauer remarked about Jack in 2008.
As he grew up, Jack has remained largely out of the spotlight. He does not maintain a public social media presence and hasn’t appeared in his sister Romy’s posts in recent times.
Romy Lauer
Romy is the only daughter of Lauer and his ex-wife Roque, born in October 2003. She made her television debut at the young age of 3, when her father read her a story on a special Sesame Street episode.
Through the years, Romy has dedicated herself to horseback riding and has been competing in jumping and various events since early childhood. She has continued to participate at high levels since attending the University of Miami in 2022.
Romy has been in a relationship with University of Miami tennis player Antonio Prat since April 2023, according to her Instagram. “Happy to live by your side. 730 days. Love you ❤️,” Prat posted on Instagram in April 2025, celebrating their second anniversary together.
In September 2024, Romy made news when it was reported that she crashed her car into a fence in the Hamptons in July of that year. She received a traffic ticket for leaving the scene, according to People, but did not face trial over the incident.
Thijs Lauer
Thijs, the youngest child of Lauer and Roque, was born in November 2006. His name, pronounced “Tice,” is a popular Dutch diminutive of Matthijs (the Dutch version of Matthew). Since Roque hails from the Netherlands and Lauer’s complete name is Matthew, Thijs represents a blend of both parents’ backgrounds.
Thijs entered the world two months after Roque filed for divorce from Lauer in September 2006, citing “cruel and inhumane” treatment. Although she retracted her filing three weeks later, the couple eventually separated permanently in 2019.
Thijs has managed to stay out of the public eye during his teenage and early adult years. He does have a private social media account, but was spotted in a photo from a trip to Mongolia in 2023, shared by his sister Romy on Instagram.
His Instagram bio indicates that Thijs is currently a student at Boston College. He gained recognition in June 2025 when he appeared on Boston College 2030’s social media page, revealing that he had spent three years attending boarding school in Switzerland before returning to the U.S. for college. “I’m a Swiss ski instructor (love to ski) and enjoy hitting the gym,” the profile shared.
