Tony Romo Admits He Made Viral Taylor Swift Comment Deliberately
It seems Tony Romo was quite intentional when he referred to Taylor Swift as Travis Kelce’s wife — well before the couple announced their engagement.
“I did, kind of, play with the fans. I think I was like, ‘And there’s…’ I think I said, ‘his wife,’” Romo, 45, mentioned during the Thursday, January 29, broadcast of SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up. “I did that on purpose, and people were like, ‘Do you know something?’ I was like, ‘Nah, I just wanted to make you guys think for a second [and] just mess with you a little bit.’”
Romo gained viral attention in December 2023 when he jokingly called Swift, 36, Kelce’s spouse while she was in attendance at his Kansas City Chiefs home game against the Buffalo Bills.
“As you can see, Kelce’s wife, Taylor Swift, is in the audience,” Romo stated during the CBS broadcast, quickly correcting himself with a laugh. “I’m sorry, girlfriend.”
Romo’s broadcasting partner, Jim Nantz, then jokingly asked if Romo knew “something we don’t know” about the couple’s relationship.
Swift and Kelce, both 36, kicked off their romance in the summer of 2023 and made their public debut at one of his Chiefs games that fall.
“Football is amazing. I’ve been missing out my whole life,” Swift told TIME in a December 2023 cover story, expressing her excitement for cheering on the Chiefs tight end. “When you call a relationship public, it means I’m going to support him while he does what he loves, we’re showing up for one another, and we don’t mind who sees us. The opposite of that involves going to great lengths to keep your relationship a secret, but we’re just proud of each other.”
Kelce, who returned the favor by attending most of Swift’s world tour concert events the next year, proposed in August 2025 after two years of dating.
“He crafted [my ring] with this incredible jeweler, Kindred Lubeck. She does all her gold engraving by hand,” Swift recounted during an interview with the U.K.’s Heart radio station in October 2025. “I had shown him a video [of the designer] a year and a half prior, and he was clearly paying attention.”
She added, “When I saw the ring, I gasped. I was like, ‘I know who made that! And also, you actually listened to me.’ He did an amazing job; it was like, ‘You really know me.’ I wasn’t sure what I would want, but somehow he did, and that’s quite impressive.”
Throughout Swift and Kelce’s relationship, Romo has been one of their most avid supporters.
“People might not realize this, but he’s probably doing less than he used to when he was younger,” Romo exclusively told Us Weekly last year regarding Swift and Kelce’s public romance. “If you’re seen out with your superstar girlfriend, it looks like you’re going out for a special occasion. But in reality, he’s just having dinner. Almost like he’s married or something.”
Romo emphasized that Kelce is “engaging in far fewer public activities” compared to his earlier NFL days.
“The reality is that if you’re frequently in the media for non-football reasons, some may assume it affects your game. However, the truth is that it could actually be beneficial when you look at it more closely.”
