Michelle Monaghan from White Lotus Shares Her Journey Battling Skin Cancer
Michelle Monaghan is opening up about her experience with a serious type of skin cancer.
At 49, Monaghan shared her diagnosis of melanoma with Us Weekly, highlighting the importance of being aware of the risks associated with skin cancer, and why SPF matters now more than ever.
“I was diagnosed with melanoma several years ago, and it truly took me by surprise. I had no prior knowledge about skin cancer,” the White Lotus actress revealed to Us. “To everyone out there: please avoid tanning beds. They increase your risk of melanoma by five times. I urge you to go for a faux tan and make sure to wear sunscreen.”
“Sunscreen is essential for me; it’s something I use every day, regardless of the weather, 365 days a year,” she added.
Monaghan’s husband, Peter White, discovered her melanoma and “encouraged” her to seek help from a dermatologist.
“He essentially saved my life,” Monaghan shared with Us. “Because of that, I started taking my skin care much more seriously. I delved deep into the safety of ingredients and related topics. Now, I consider myself an advocate. I learned so much and want to emphasize how vital it is to incorporate sunscreen into your daily regimen and how simple it is.”
The actress is a global ambassador for the luxury skincare brand U Beauty, established by Tina Chen Chang in 2019.
“I was in a makeup trailer for a ‘no makeup/makeup’ look for a role, aiming for that natural appearance while ensuring my skin looked its best,” Monaghan recounted to Us. “[A makeup designer] recommended the Resurfacing Compound, and honestly, it’s a game-changer among U Beauty products. I noticed a change within about three days, especially with pore size and brightness. Over time, I saw improvements in sun spots and dark patches. Then, I started using the eye cream, and U Beauty called at just the right moment.”
Monaghan shared her everyday skincare routine with Us.
“I begin my day by washing my face and applying the Resurfacing Compound,” she stated. “I work indoors in Vancouver, so the Barrier Cream is crucial; it’s very hydrating. It’s currently cold here, so I rely on the Resurfacing Compound, the Barrier Cream, and Super Body Hydrator during winter. And if I’m going to be outside, like next week, I’ll use the SPF, the Multimodal Sheer, which I adore. I’m a sunscreen enthusiast. This product is particularly special to me.”
Monaghan also hinted at a new hockey series that Netflix recently announced is in the works. The eight-episode series, produced by Nick Naveda and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps, is currently untitled.
“I’m a huge sports fan, but hockey was something I never really connected with, despite being from rural America, where it’s usually hockey or football,” Monaghan explained. “My town was predominantly focused on football, so I watched a lot of that. Hockey is a new domain for me. I’m not sure why it’s currently trending, maybe Heated Rivalry has something to do with its resurgence, but it’s an exhilarating and intense sport. I’m truly enjoying immersing myself in this environment. Now that I’m aware of it, I totally appreciate its appeal.”
