Alysa Liu Reveals Her Beauty Essentials and DIY Strategies for Competition Glamour

Team USA figure skater Alysa Liu shared her favorite makeup products and how she manages her own beauty preparations for competitions.

The 20-year-old Olympic gold medalist enthusiastically discussed her must-have items from Rare Beauty during a chat with Popsugar in a TikTok video posted on Tuesday, February 24. “I do use a lot of Rare Beauty products,” she mentioned, referencing Selena Gomez’s brand, which gained attention when she wore it at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy.

“If I had to pick just one, it would definitely be the Gel Liner,” Liu stated.

When inquired whether she and her fellow skaters had “glam teams” for competitions, Liu joked, “Heck no! We do it all ourselves.”

As for her DIY beauty routine, Liu shared that “before every competition,” she loves to indulge in “an everything shower.”

“I’ve got to use the Moisture Glide Venus Razor; that’s a must,” she emphasized. “And, of course, I do my makeup, hair, and make sure to get a good night’s sleep the night before.”

Fans expressed their excitement over Liu’s makeup choices in the comments. One wrote, “Selena, please make her an ambassador or hire her for some ads!!” Another added, “Rare Beauty better sponsor her!” A third follower commented, “ALYSA FOR RARE BEAUTY PLEASEEEEEEEEE.”

Liu’s discussion coincided with her viral appearance using Rare Beauty’s Tinted Lip Oil Stain in the Muted Berry shade during her gold medal-winning free skate on February 19. (Prior to that, she snagged gold in the team event with Amber Glenn, Ilia Malinin, Ellie Kam, Daniel O’Shea, Madison Chock, and Evan Bates on February 8.)

Just before stepping onto the podium, Liu was heard asking, “Where’s my lipstick?” She quickly reached for her lip oil and applied it for that perfect photo opportunity.

Gomez, 33, reacted to Liu wearing her gloss on February 20. She shared the clip of Liu and wrote, “Congratulations @alysaxliu,” along with a heart-hand emoji. “(She’s just like me fr),” the singer added.

This isn’t the first instance of Liu being open about her beauty routine. Earlier this month, she elaborated on the significance of her striped brunette-and-blonde hair.

“I just wanted to be a tree,” she told Paralympian Haven Shepherd in a TikTok interview. “Three years ago, I put my first [bleached band] and thought, ‘Oh, next year, wintertime … I’ll do the second one,’ so I went for it.” When Shepherd, 22, dubbed her a “DIY girl,” Liu admitted she initially created the stripes herself. “To achieve this light, I had to go to a salon,” she explained. “I couldn’t lift my hair to this level on my own. It lightened well, but not enough, so I went to a salon to get it perfectly matched.”

Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu’s distinctive striped hairstyle may have brought Team USA luck at the 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina. She further explained to NBC News, “So this [top band] I did at the end of 2023, then did another one in 2024 and 2025.” Liu mentioned that initially, she “bleached it” herself, resulting in a “gingery” color. Now, she has professional colorist Kelsey Miller in St. Louis to achieve her desired “light” look.

Miller also shared with Allure in February 2026 that it took “five hours” to craft Liu’s “milk tea” appearance. “I specialize in dimensional hair color, redheads, and extensions,” Miller remarked. “It was exciting to do something different from my usual style.”
