Malcolm in the Middle underwent multiple recastings in its four-part revival.

Following Hulu’s acquisition of the revival series for Malcolm in the Middle, it was announced that Erik Per Sullivan would be replaced, with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark stepping into the role of Dewey.

The remaining cast — including Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Masterson, and Justin Berfield — returned to reprise their roles. Additionally, Kiana Madeira, Anthony Timpano, Vaughan Murrae, and Keeley Karsten were cast in significant new roles.

“It’s been 25 years since we first premiered Malcolm in the Middle. I’m thrilled… I might have even let out a little yelp,” said Cranston, 70, alongside Kaczmarek in a December 2024 announcement. “What a joy to yell at that kid once more! We’re really excited about reuniting and seeing what the family has been up to.”

The revival was penned by Linwood Boomer, the original series creator. It follows Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter as they become involved in the family’s drama when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) invite them to their 40th wedding anniversary party, as stated in a press release.

It was later disclosed that Per Sullivan received a substantial offer to return for the Malcolm in the Middle revival, but he ultimately declined.

In an interview with The Guardian in April 2026, Kaczmarek, Per Sullivan’s on-screen mother, addressed his absence, noting that the retired actor is “studying Dickens and is an exceptional student.”

“They offered him a ton of money to come back, and he simply said, ‘No, thank you,'” she added.

Kaczmarek has previously defended Per Sullivan’s choice to step out of the limelight.

“I respect it because many people think being in show business is the best thing ever. It’s not for everyone,” she remarked in a 2024 interview, highlighting that Per Sullivan is now a student at “a very prestigious American university.”
