Chick-fil-A Offers Free Ice Cream for Unplugging from Your Phone
Here’s a surprising offer that many families might not expect from a fast-food place: put your phone away and receive a complimentary dessert.
A Chick-fil-A in Towson Place, Maryland, is providing free Icedream® Cones to customers who agree to put their phones in a designated container for the duration of their meal. This initiative, known as the “Chick-fil-A® Cell Phone Coop Challenge,” is a limited in-store promotion — not something rolled out nationwide.

How the Chick-fil-A Cell Phone Coop Challenge Works
The idea is refreshingly straightforward. As noted on the signage shared by the X account Complex, the steps are:
- “Request a coop from a Team Member, place all phones inside, and enjoy your meal together.”
- “Once you’re done, inform a Team Member, and everyone at the table will receive an Icedream® Cone as a reward.”
- “Grab your coop and take the challenge.”
And that’s all there is to it. No app downloads, no loyalty programs, and no purchase minimum beyond what you’re already eating. Just ask for a “coop” — a designated container — stash your devices, and enjoy that chicken sandwich like it’s 2005.
The Chick-fil-A location in Towson Place also announced the challenge on Facebook, stating:
“Join the Dine-in Cell Phone Coop Challenge at Chick-fil-A Towson Place. Request a coop, place all phones inside, and enjoy your meal distraction-free. Once your table is finished, notify a Team Member, and everyone will get an Icedream Cone as a reward. Are you ready for the challenge?”
The Phone-at-Dinner Problem Is Bigger Than You Think
If you’ve looked around a restaurant and noticed entire families quietly scrolling on their phones, you’re not imagining it. A 2023 study indicated that 68 percent of households have someone using a phone during meals with others.
The surprising part? Many individuals aren’t fond of it. The same study revealed that 65 percent of respondents dislike it, and 42% believe that using phones during meals is disrespectful.
This presents a notable contradiction: while most people are disturbed by phone usage at mealtimes, it occurs in over two-thirds of households regardless. It’s a habit many recognize as problematic, yet few have managed to overcome.
Will the Challenge Expand to Other Chick-fil-A Locations?
Before you consider planning a road trip to Maryland, it’s important to clarify: this is not a nationwide initiative. This is merely one Chick-fil-A location testing the concept, and there’s no indication from the company about expanding it to other outlets.
Nonetheless, the concept has evidently resonated online, with social media posts gaining traction across various platforms. The attraction is clear: it’s a low-stakes, uplifting challenge that offers a small trade-off — putting your phone aside for 20 minutes — in exchange for free ice cream and potentially meaningful conversation with those across from you.
Whether other Chick-fil-A locations or competing establishments will take note remains to be seen. For now, if you’re dining at the Towson Place location, the coop is ready for you.
