Melissa Rivers’ 2026 Met Gala: Top Worst Dressed Celebrities

Melissa Rivers is back with her annual fashion critique, highlighting the most puzzling outfits from the 2026 Met Gala.

Wielding her sharp wit, sharper than a stiletto, the former Fashion Police host shares with Us Weekly the celebrities who topped her worst-dressed list during the glamorous red carpet event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on May 4.

A particular style attempt that fell flat for Rivers, 58, was Janelle Monáe in a custom creation by Christian Siriano, which incorporated live moss and electrical wires. Rivers comments to Us, “It appeared like a craft project. The idea was nature overtaking art … but it’s all too abstract for me.”

Another attention-grabbing outfit that missed the mark for Rivers was worn by Sam Smith. Smith, who identifies with they/them pronouns, attended with their partner, designer Christian Cowan, in outfits designed by Cowan, 30.

The “To Be Free” singer, 33, struck Rivers as “the Grim Geisha,” quipping, “like the Geisha of Death coming your way.”

To up the drama, Smith adorned their ensemble, embellished with over 230,000 crystals and beads, with a large fascinator created by Cowan and Stephen Jones.

Rivers remarked that while Heidi Klum’s outfit fit the Met Gala’s extravagant atmosphere, it was a look she could “reuse” for her Halloween party this year. Klum, 52, collaborated with her long-time Halloween makeup artist Mike Marino on the sculptural design that made her resemble a living statue.

Rivers reveals to Us her thoughts on another fashion misstep, saying, “I was not a fan of Lena Dunham’s dress.”

Dunham, 39, donned a custom red Valentino gown embellished with sequins and feathers, featuring a dramatic boa train. “It just didn’t resonate with me, especially as she’s experiencing such professional success right now,” Rivers confides to Us. “I just thought, ‘No, no, please, no.’”

She adds, “And to be honest, I encounter this issue frequently because I’m short: you had to be tall to pull off that dress.”

Melissa Rivers evaluated the Kardashian-Jenner family’s Met Gala 2026 outfits from best to worst, exclusively telling Us Weekly that “they got the memo.” After Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, and Kris Jenner graced the red carpet at the New York City affair on May 4, Rivers, 58, noted that they all “understood” […]

Regarding Katy Perry’s white off-the-shoulder Stella McCartney gown and silver mirrored mask, Rivers commented that it was out of this world — but not in a favorable way.

She quipped, “The back of the train looked singed, as if she’d just come back from the Blue Origin trip; glad the heat shields worked.”

Fortunately for fashion enthusiasts, Rivers will be dissecting more Met Gala looks in an upcoming episode of her “Melissa Rivers Group Text” podcast.
