Maitland Ward Criticizes Sydney Sweeney’s Euphoria Plotline
Actress-turned-OnlyFans creator Maitland Ward has expressed her dissatisfaction with Sydney Sweeney‘s character development in season 3 of Euphoria.
“Given the current climate, it’s shocking that they portrayed her as a baby for pornographic OnlyFans content. This not only raises concerns but also reinforces the stereotype that sex workers lack a moral compass and will do anything for money,” the Boy Meets World alum, 49, remarked in an interview with Variety on Sunday, May 10. “There’s a persistent, inaccurate stigma that associates sex work with sex trafficking and abuse. They’ve turned it into a joke. That’s far from amusing.”
Sweeney has portrayed Cassie on the HBO series since its first season. In the most recent season, Cassie explores a career as an adult content creator while also trying to establish herself in Hollywood. Recent episodes depict her posing topless with an ice cream cone and dressed as a baby.
Euphoria creator Sam Levinson has previously commented on Cassie’s contentious storyline in season 3.
“[Cassie] has her dog house along with her little dog ears and nose, which adds humor, but what truly makes the scene is that her housekeeper is the one filming it,” Levinson stated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in April. “We aimed to uncover the layers of absurdity so we avoid getting overly immersed in her fantasy — the punchline is to break the fourth wall.”
Ward subsequently criticized Levinson’s comments, reasoning that they trivialize adult content creators.
“This reflects deeply on why the OnlyFans storyline is portrayed in this manner. It lacks seriousness,” Ward told Variety on Sunday. “It brings back memories of when I wore lingerie on Boy Meets World. It just seems like the male writers are projecting their fantasies. Dressing someone traditionally blonde and beautiful with large breasts as a dog and a baby is bizarre yet all too typical in Hollywood.”
Ward isn’t alone in her critique. Fellow OnlyFans creator Taila Maddison shared with Us Weekly that her job encompasses more than just “fulfilling kinks.”
“I’d estimate that only 20 to 30 percent of what my subscribers seek revolves around that, while the rest captures my daily activities,” she shared with Us. “That said, exploring kinks can be one of the more enjoyable aspects. It’s always fascinating when a request surprises you, making you think, ‘I never imagined that would interest people.’”
