Rachael Leigh Cook Initially Hesitant About Collaborating with Hallmark
Rachael Leigh Cook has been one of Hallmark’s shining stars since 2016 — but she almost declined the network’s offer after contemplating her personal brand.
“I really credit the Hallmark Channel with my sincere transition into producing,” Cook, 46, shared on the May 13 episode of the “I Love You So Much — ILYSM” podcast.
The actress mentioned that she began her journey with Hallmark a decade ago, but she “wasn’t certain how that would unfold.”
“One disagreement Daniel [Gillies], my ex-husband, and I consistently had was about my ability to handle challenging content! He believed that I couldn’t, and I was like, ‘That’s not accurate!’ But sadly, it was. Daniel, you were right,” Cook recalled, admitting that her perceived brand and fear of darker narratives almost led her to reject Hallmark’s offer.
Cook confessed, “I cannot tackle serious content, which made me hesitant about the Hallmark Channel — I thought it was a bit too gentle.”
She remembered thinking, “It was feeding into my insecurities. But then I thought, ‘Forget it. This is who I am.’ I’m a total romantic. I love love.”
The She’s All That star recognized that once she embraced her true self, Hallmark’s heartwarming tales were precisely what she desired to explore both in front of and behind the camera.
“I joined them, and they are incredibly supportive of women and their actors,” Cook said of the network. “They genuinely provide so much freedom that you’re not restricted to the words, punctuation, or anything. They really allow for a lot of creativity. That was truly empowering.”
She recounted Hallmark’s faith in her work as a producer as the catalyst that “sparked my journey of wanting to tell stories.”
Cook also expressed that Hallmark’s focus on romantic comedies aligns perfectly with her viewing preferences.
“I’ve always been genuinely passionate about the romantic comedy genre. I indulge in it constantly. It’s in my veins,” she laughed.
Cook made her Hallmark Channel debut in 2016 with Summer Love. That same year, she played Frankie Baldwin opposite Brendan Penny’s Nate Deluca in Autumn in the Vineyard.
The chemistry between the actors sparked two additional In the Vineyard films and established Cook as a mainstay for the network. Autumn in the Vineyard was also her first project as an executive producer for Hallmark, and she has since contributed behind the scenes on several of their projects.
Cook recently served as a producer on her 2025 Hallmark success Sisterhood, Inc. and starred in 2026’s Caught by Love.
Her connection to Hallmark has also blossomed into a real-life romance with Brandon Routh.
After her divorce from Gillies in 2019 — with whom she shares daughter Charlotte and son Theodore — Cook began dating Routh, 46, in 2025. Both she and Routh are Hallmark stars, with Routh debuting on the network in 2014’s The Nine Lives of Christmas.
