Sweet Magnolias Showrunner Discusses Season 5 Without Ty and the Series’ Future

Throughout Sweet Magnolias season 5, Serenity experienced significant transformations — with series showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson revealing every twist to Us Weekly.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for season 5 of Sweet Magnolias.

For years, Sweet Magnolias has chronicled the journeys of lifelong friends Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott), and Helen Decatur (Heather Headley) as they navigate love, family, heartbreak, and new beginnings in a quaint South Carolina town.

Season 5, which premiered on Netflix on Thursday, June 11, primarily showcased Maddie and Helen embarking on new adventures — one settling into marriage while the other prepares to walk down the aisle — while Dana Sue faced unexpected trials.

Juggling marital issues as her husband Ronnie (Brandon Quinn) dove headfirst into a new business venture, enduring a devastating house fire, dealing with professional challenges, and contemplating her daughter Annie’s (Anneliese Judge) imminent college departure, the chef-turned-teacher found herself bearing the emotional burden of the season.

Courtesy of Netflix Grab your margaritas and pour one out, because Sweet Magnolias showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson is unpacking the Netflix hit’s most explosive season yet. Since its debut in 2020, Sweet Magnolias has covered only a few months in the lives of Serenity’s residents. However, that all changed with […]

In an exclusive conversation with Us Weekly, Anderson discussed why this was the ideal time to shine a light on the Sullivan family.

“We felt the escalating pressure of the mistakes she and Ronnie have made, both separately and together, which also served as dramatic contrast,” she described. “Helen and her fiancé, Eric (Dion Johnstone), are finally tying the knot, bringing joy, while Cal (Justin Breuning) and Maddie are thriving. It felt like the perfect moment for Dana Sue and Ronnie to be weighed down by their circumstances. … Everything aligned at this junction.”

Ty and Annie’s Shocking Breakup

After Us revealed that Carson Rowland would not return as Maddie’s eldest son, Ty Townsend, it was disclosed in the series that he left for Europe with his band at the end of season 4 and had not returned for six months — even missing both Annie’s prom and spring break.

When he ultimately bailed again for her graduation, Annie made the difficult decision to end the relationship.

Anderson shared with Us that after Rowland decided to skip season 5 completely, she aimed to “make the best out of the situation” by exploring “what occurs when individuals leave their loved ones in pursuit of a dream.”

Maddie faced her own set of challenges when she temporarily moved to New York City at the end of season 4 for a publishing job, yet her response to the distance was markedly different.

“Because both characters have left behind many of the same friends, we had a chance to contrast how people felt about their departures and the weight we carry wanting to support someone, even as their happiness pulls them away from us,” Anderson explained. “It’s unfortunate, but Anneliese played her arc beautifully, and we did our best to fill the void in her life with intriguing options.”

Anderson described Ty and Annie’s split as a “slow unraveling,” so by graduation, Annie felt she had given him enough chances. Conversely, while she achieved acceptance, Maddie struggled with her son’s actions.

“It’s Maddie, the mother, who feels the most disappointment, that maternal sentiment of ‘I raised him better than this,’” Anderson reflected. “We thought this slow buildup would create a more poignant story arc instead of a sudden disappointment.”

Though Ty didn’t make a physical appearance in season 5, he did send Annie a box of gifts to congratulate her on graduation and apologize. By the end of the season, while she had a new romance brewing — stay tuned for more on that — she held onto Ty’s T-shirt.

In the finale’s last moments, viewers witnessed Ty attempting to call Annie during Helen’s wedding, but she missed it. When asked if Ty might return in future seasons, Anderson noted that the door is “open,” and she anticipates seeing “who walks through that door.”

Annie’s New Love Triangle

Annie began the season feeling content in her distance from Ty, opening her heart to potential new romances as she prepared for college. When asked about the introduction of two new love interests for the high school senior post-breakup, Anderson stated, “Because she deserves it!”

“She has been so dedicated and loyal, and we thought it would be exciting to truly broaden her horizons, especially since one of the reasons season 5 was positioned as it was, was to capture her graduation and the onset of summer,” she added. “During that last summer before college, the question becomes, ‘Do things hold more value or become trivial?’”

In the end, Anderson felt Annie could explore her identity as she entered college through two distinct choices: fun-loving Blake and introspective Noah.

“I will say, the writer’s room was deeply divided between Team Blake and Team Noah,” Anderson laughed. “But we found an engaging combination in creating a compelling love triangle: the ideal boy-next-door and the guy with potential. It’s just a delicious setup, which is why we gave her two love interests.”

Annie ultimately chose Noah, sharing a sweet kiss in the finale before introducing him to Helen and Eric at their wedding.

Dana Sue and Ronnie’s Marriage Troubles

Despite Dana Sue and Ronnie renewing their vows at the end of season 3, their past issues resurfaced in season 5 — a plotline Anderson always had in mind for the couple.

“We knew that if we were fortunate enough to continue, they had rushed back into each other’s lives, and there would be consequences. Throughout season 4, Ronnie wrestled with his identity and purpose post-Bill’s death, evident in his overwhelming obsession with the Bike Barn business,” Anderson described. “Dana Sue’s statement at the end of season 5, ‘We need to start from scratch and rebuild,’ really encapsulates their struggles.”

Ronnie’s fixation on the Bike Barn highlighted their underlying challenges, especially with the introduction of newcomer Courtney alongside farmer Jeremy.

“They merely taped over cracks and tried to mask ongoing issues, which is unrealistic in a relationship,” Anderson remarked.

After it became apparent that Courtney had made a mess of the business, Jeremy stepped back, while Ronnie stubbornly pressed on with the failing venture, attempting to prove his love for his family. His single-mindedness — even after a devastating house fire — only exacerbated Dana Sue’s frustration, leaving their relationship’s future uncertain.

“Dana Sue expressed, ‘This isn’t sufficient,’ while Ronnie reacted with panic and misguided actions, stemming from his crisis of identity. The competitive tension with Cal settling into a new baseball role and Eric thriving as head chef at Sullivan’s further highlights his struggles, as he grapples with the contrast of their maturity versus his own,” Anderson explained.

While Ronnie’s actions were frustrating, Anderson expressed sympathy, noting that he didn’t intend to bring pain to anyone, but as an addict, his “impulse control” often leads to conflict.

“We discussed extensively how recovering addicts sometimes stumble, falling into new forms of addiction. For Ronnie, his pursuit of an unattainable dream and refusal to acknowledge his limitations was a manifestation of that struggle,” she detailed.

Anderson acknowledged that while it’s clear Ronnie “loves” Dana Sue, their marriage carries inherent flaws rooted in their tumultuous past.

Dana Sue’s Flirtation With Newbie Clark

Amid her troubles with Ronnie, Dana Sue unexpectedly formed a bond with her former childhood rival, Clarke. Though they initially clashed, he ultimately decided to sell his storefront to the Magnolias for a new venture and seized every chance to flirt with Dana Sue. Their connection blossomed over shared memories and canolis, providing Dana Sue with much-needed support during tumultuous times.

“We introduced him into the narrative because Dana Sue has often been selfless — her focus on being a mother, wife, and boss. However, a key issue in her relationship with Ronnie is that he rarely listens, and whenever she seeks to slow down, he perceives it as criticism,” Anderson conveyed.

The showrunners had “passionate and fervent” discussions surrounding the allure of a man who truly listens, something Clarke exemplified throughout the season.

The future of Dana Sue’s marriage to Ronnie and her budding relationship with Clarke remains uncertain, but Anderson stated that Clarke brought a refreshing “different energy” to Serenity’s men.

“There’s an insidiously disruptive quality to him,” she remarked. “When we filmed our first scene with Clarke, Dion and Justin [who portray Eric and Cal] both approached me and said, ‘Poor Ronnie.’”

Helen and Eric’s Wedding and Potential Future

Season 5 of Sweet Magnolias granted fans a long-awaited moment: Helen and Eric finally exchanged vows. However, the journey was not without its challenges, as Eric grappled with cold feet regarding his traditional family’s reaction to his vibrant wedding plans. The introduction of Eric’s niece, Jessica, who arrived at her uncle’s house amidst parental divorce turmoil, added another layer of complexity.

Anderson explained that with the potential for Helen and Eric to foster teenagers in the future, Jessica serves as a perfect segue into their next chapter.

“During season 5, they discussed ‘children of the heart’ during a The Nutcracker performance, and Jessica symbolizes that opportunity. Most of their interactions have been with teenagers and young adults in their 20s, making her introduction feel organic,” she explained.

Anderson aimed to ensure Jessica interacted with the Mini Magnolias — Cece (Harlan Drum), who formerly lived with Helen, Annie, and Lily (Artemis) — providing a window into Eric’s background.

“Our discussions centered around Eric’s upbringing and how it shapes who he is outside Serenity. We aimed to showcase the contrasting facets of his passionate yet reserved nature, highlighting familial influences,” Anderson said.

Despite the obstacles, Anderson emphasized the necessity of all conflicts finding resolution by the wedding date. “This highlights the importance of seeing Eric not just as a son, but how the world perceives him,” she clarified.

Will there be further “revelations” and “realizations” in a potential season 6 of Sweet Magnolias? Anderson confirmed there would certainly be more teenagers in Helen and Eric’s lives, accompanied by “unexpected challenges and joys of opening new doors.”

Reflecting on Helen finally discovering her soulmate, she elaborated on why Ryan’s (Michael Shenefelt) role was crucial in her love journey before closing that chapter for good.

“We all feel strongly about Ryan and his function in our narrative was to illustrate that even intelligent women can make poor choices. Yet now, she’s making wiser decisions, partnering with a true equal,” she noted.

After the unexpected death of Maddie’s ex-husband, Bill Townsend (Chris Klein), in season 4 created upheaval, Maddie and Cal finally enjoyed their honeymoon in Savannah, with Cal surprising Maddie after Helen’s bachelorette weekend.

Anderson told Us that season 5 was the perfect juncture to afford the couple some peace after navigating job losses, grief, anger management, and the initial adjustments of merging their families. The combination of their honeymoon led to some of Sweet Magnolias’ most fiery moments yet.

Anderson, Garcia Swisher, and Bruening frequently discussed the evolution of Maddie and Cal’s relationship during season 5, ensuring the romantic spark remained vibrant.

“Even in the midst of marriage and parenting, there’s still passion. While it may take more effort to carve out intimate moments, it’s undoubtedly possible,” Anderson shared, acknowledging the existing camaraderie between the two actors — having known each other prior to the show. “When we decided to bring more heat, everyone was keen.”

“The challenge for a happily married couple is to maintain their passion, and we aimed to showcase that,” she revealed.

Looking forward, particularly with Cal’s past figure, Javier, re-entering his life to help with a new baseball team in Serenity, Anderson stated: “Cal’s return to baseball will prove challenging. Let’s just leave it at that.”

Noreen and Jeremy’s Love Story Deepens

Season 5 highlighted the growth of Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears) and Jeremy’s (Chase Anderson) relationship as they embraced family life and tackled challenges together, such as the tumultuous Bike Barn experience. Their shared journey throughout the ten episodes was steeped in cohabitation bliss, with Anderson hinting that viewers could witness them taking their relationship to the next stage — a possible engagement — if the show continues.

“We adore them as a couple. Their dynamic radiates sweetness and gentleness, which stands out amid the more intense relationships of others,” she expressed. “I definitely foresee avenues for them to deepen their bond and unearth new layers of joy. Wink, wink, wink.”

Kyle and Lily’s Conflict, Upcoming Long Distance Romance

Maddie’s younger son, Kyle (Logan Allen), and Lily encountered challenges in season 5 as new character Timothy attempted to disrupt their bond in the community play while vying for Lily’s affection. Although Anderson explained Timothy wasn’t explicitly trying to break them apart, they found themselves needing to navigate his domineering personality as a cohesive unit.

“Timothy sees himself as the dominant figure in any scenario, leading him to unintentionally come across as flirtatious. However, our primary aim was for Kyle and Lily to collaborate in confronting this challenge rather than exclude him,” Anderson stated.

Kyle and Lily have enjoyed a meaningful relationship since season 3, but a potential season 6 could explore the difficulties of long-distance as Lily heads to college while Kyle completes his senior year. Regarding their future, Anderson remarked, “If we’re fortunate enough for more episodes, there’s a chance for long-distance love to succeed occasionally.”

Isaac and Michael’s Next Steps

Anderson emphasized the importance of timing for Isaac (Chris Medlin) as his romance with Michael (Kyle Findley) evolved in season 5, culminating in Michael relocating to Serenity.

“We always aimed for the right moment, ensuring Isaac felt secure in his identity before embracing a relationship,” Anderson explained to Us. “Michael represents a fresh start for Isaac, who’s just beginning to be open to love, while Michael actively pursues him.”

Who Runs Serenity Secrets?!

Anderson remained tight-lipped regarding the identity of the gossip page protagonist introduced in season 1 but assured she knows who it is.

“We know the identity, the motivations for its creation, and its quiet periods,” she teased.

When queried if viewers might finally receive answers in the next season, she responded, “Absolutely! Or maybe.”
