Understanding the Ending of The Bear Season 5: A Series Finale Breakdown

The Bear has officially concluded — but where did everyone end up?

In the finale aired on Thursday, June 25, Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) faced a challenging dinner service at The Bear. The team was anxious about the restaurant’s future, which took a positive turn when Sydney earned 2 Michelin stars.

Ebra (Edwin Lee Gibson) finally proposed his idea to franchise The Beef. While both ventures were expected to continue thriving, Carmy ultimately decided to leave. He contemplated his choice to exit the culinary world during an interview for an intern position at an architecture firm.

The series wrapped up with Richie planning a trip to Japan. Despite his nervousness about this milestone, he managed to board the plane, embracing a hopeful future.

In the final scene, everyone — including guest stars — surprised Richie’s daughter with a birthday party at The Bear. They all came together as a family to mark the show’s conclusion.

The popular Hulu series, which debuted in 2022, delves into the food industry through the eyes of chef Carmy, who returned to Chicago after his brother Mikey’s (Jon Bernthal) passing to take charge of their family sandwich shop, The Beef. Following the closure of the local establishment, Carmy and the team transformed it into The Bear, experiencing both triumphs and setbacks.

Even with The Bear flourishing as a business, season 4 took a surprising turn in the finale when Sydney, Richie, and Natalie (Abby Elliot) discovered that Carmy was preparing to retire and hand over the restaurant to them.

This resolution left fans somewhat discontent, as Carmy seemed to disconnect from the group, save for his romantic interest Claire (Molly Gordon). After rekindling their connection earlier in the season, it appeared the fictional couple would reunite, a development that didn’t sit well with some viewers.

Gordon, who has been associated with White since 2024, addressed the fan backlash prior to the season 4 launch.

“I’m always ‘the friend,’” she shared with Vanity Fair in June 2025. “I’ve never portrayed a romantic character. I thought, ‘Whoa, this is going to be a different experience.’”

Gordon observed that White’s character “is someone whom people feel very protective over, and introducing a romantic aspect has been somewhat controversial. That’s been at times frustrating, captivating, and intriguing — to be part of something that generates strong opinions.”

All episodes of The Bear are now available for streaming on Hulu.
