Did Princess Diana Accidentally Spill Perfume on Her Wedding Dress?
The mystery surrounding Princess Diana’s wedding day wardrobe issue has finally come to light.
Forty-five years ago, the beloved Princess Diana wed King Charles in a lavish ceremony that remains captivating to this day. There have been long-standing rumors suggesting Diana accidentally spilled perfume on her iconic dress just before saying “I do,” but her renowned designer, Elizabeth Emanuel, tells Us she cannot verify that claim.
“People say that, [but] I’m unsure how accurate that is since I didn’t witness it,” Elizabeth reveals. “However, this is a story that has circulated. I think Barbara Daly, the makeup artist, might have seen it happen, but I can’t say for certain. Thankfully, I wasn’t aware at the time; otherwise, I would have panicked.”
Diana’s gown, designed by Elizabeth and her husband, David Emanuel, was an exquisite ivory silk taffeta and lace creation, embellished with over 10,000 pearls and sequins, and featured a hidden 18-karat gold horseshoe sewn into the fabric along with a stunning 25-foot-long train.
Reports indicated that Diana had spilled perfume on the front of her attire and used her hand to conceal the stain.
Thankfully, Elizabeth, now 73, revealed that she and David, also 73, were ready for any potential accidents and crafted “a spare top skirt” to be placed over the dress to mask any issues.

“We created an overskirt to be used in case of any issues, such as if she’d ripped anything down the front of her wedding gown; we could have easily slipped it over her head, and nobody would have noticed,” Elizabeth confides to Us. “Fortunately, we never needed to use it.”
Elizabeth also revealed there was a “very secret” second wedding dress prepared in case her bridal outfit was leaked before the ceremony.
The designer explains, “We were aware that many journalists were trying to uncover the design, and I later learned that our seamstresses were approached by media willing to pay for information, but they remained incredibly loyal and wonderful. We felt like family, so nobody disclosed the secret.”
